I have a leaky roof. I am going to repair it myself, put new shingles on. If the insurance company agrees to fix it, how do I go about this (getting a check from them) if I am doing the work myself? I basically want their money to cover the cost of the materials.

Why not see if they'll fix it and then get quotes so you don't have to do it yourself?

Will the materials cost more than $1,000.00?

You would have to file a claim with your ins co for them to even inspect it

Yep, have contacted insurance. But how do I go about getting the check if I'm doing work myself?

O.K., but will the materials or your total cost be more than a $1,000.00???

It may not be worth making a claim if they aren't a lot higher than your deductible. Your insurance should be in place to cover catastrophic damage not necessarily smaller damages.

Why is the roof leaking? Was it damage by an object. Insurance doesn't just pay for home improvement projects.

Been in the house for two months. Shingles coming off. Leaky sky-lights.

Is it a newly constructed house?

I'm no insurance adjuster but based on what you have shared I don't believe this is even something that should be covered.

Stuff wears out...even on a house. When that deterioration shows up it's your responsibility to fix it.

Now if a storm caused the damage as opposed to the storm revealing the damage that's another story.

A couple of shingles blown off and a leaking skylight just doesn't seem like a storm caused result to me.

Kinda what I figured. I'll have the insurance lady take a look anyway, just for shits and giggles.

Might as well. If you don't make a claim it doesn't seem like there would be any harm in having them take a look.

Why the hell didn't you ask the insurance company when you talked to them?

"Y'know, I'll probably get a better answer from the morons on OC"
