Harvest Preparatory School's athletic teams will be banned from postseason play for the rest of this school year through 2012-13 as part of its punishment for using ineligible players and coaches, changing grades and recruiting athletes, the Ohio High School Athletic Association says.

Boys basketball coach Mike Thornton, who was coach at Africentric when it forfeited its 2005 Division IV state championship for using an ineligible player, was listed in the report as having visited prospective athletes, possibly helping one write a required entrance essay, and waiving application, enrollment and testing fees for at least one student-athlete.

Not a good thing for a coach to have on his resume!!!

The "church" is Christian in name only.

Thankfully Hiland beat them fair and square (despite HP's inequities) so Hiland didn't "back in" to the state championship.

It took this long to figure out there were"shady" going ons at Harvest Prep. Personally, as a teacher and coach in a public school I think the punishment is light. This Christian school, as it is called, is nothing but an athletic factory for the best athletes to come in and compete. Academics are not a priority, not even mentioned I bet when potential athletes are contacted. The OHSAA needs to bring the "HAMMER" down hard on this school and any others who are breaking the rules and policies.

Mike Thornton should be lucky to get another head coaching job in Ohio after this one.

the latest is these penalties are not yet "official"; the investigation is still ongoing. But almost certainly there are likely to be significant penalties of some kind you would think.

Typical Dispatch sloppy reporting, not verifying the facts. Agree it appears that the penalties will be significant but how hards is it to call OHSAA and check.

It's pretty safe to say that we wont be seeing HP in the state tourny for a long time if ever again. No more "Parsley's Pros" in the final 4 for sure.

I believe he had a job out of state before the State tournament. That was the last I heard in March.

What you don't understand is that God is on their side - at least from Rev Rod's perspective. I wonder how he is viewing this scandal now? There is a contradiction of his theology here. He says God wants us to be healthy, wealthy, and experience nothing but blessing - all the time - and getting that depends on having enough "faith" and, of course, sending him a K for your "seed" to demonstrate our faith. World Harvest Church and its school are not experiencing blessing. Didn't he/his church have enough faith? Didn't they sow enough seeds? If God directly talks to Rod, didn't this ever come up in the conversation? Probably the simple answer Rod would give is that the OHSAA is a tool of Satan to persecute them, but if they have faith, and if we will all send him another K, God will prevail. Sick.
