I took a call during the Florida/Bama game. This call was from a friend in the sports media. He told me Urban will be offered this contract. Meyers brother said his price was 5 million. ND is offering 6.3 million.

Question. Is any coach worth this kind of money. Please, this is a leget question, no bashing, just your opinion.

Yes. The amount of money he would make the university if he even WENT to a national championship game, let alone win one, would be ungodly. And I do believe he would win at ND.

P.S. You should add a poll to this thread

Yes. Simple reason being, if you get to a BCS bowl, your team gets a fat payout. The Rose Bowl this year is giving each team $18,000,000. And a team like ND also has the NBC contrat so it's not like the money will not be made back if he puts a winner on the field.

No, I'd draw the line for college coaches somewhere around 5-5.5 million.

Now, I'd have incentives in the contract for National Titles or BCS wins. But strictly contract no college coach is worth 6.3 million.

Meyer has done a great job at UF, but Saban could easily win a national title this year and have two NC's at two different SEC schools this decade.

It's the conferences who get the 18 million, not just OSU.

I really hope Meyer doesn't end up at Notre Dame.

True, but what confernce is ND in? :)

They'd get that whole amount if they get into a BCS game.

Yep. They are gonna be down next year. Though I can't stand the coverage he gets Tebow is the life blood of that offense, and I highly doubt the backup QB is close to the production that Tebow had. If/when Florida struggles next year, you may see Urban's aura start to fade, just a little.

not so fast sir, notre dame receives 4.5 million (an amount equivalent to that received by a conference that places a second team in a BCS bowl) if they make it into a bcs bowl game. if notre dame does not play in a bcs bowl (like this year) they get 1.3 million.

their deal is not as lucrative as it once was.

I hadn't really considered Meyer in the mix but really, the SEC seems to be closing the gap, especially losing his team leader. There may not be a better time for him to jump ship to a program which if he can get them within shouting distance of where their talent can utilized and where their fan base believes they ought to be he'd be revered, unlike the heat I'm sure he's taking this season down south from people who didn't like how the gators looked mortal down the stretch instead of dominating teams every week.

Oh. I would've figured they got the whole 18 million. My mistake, but really had to resort to name calling, for a simple statement that turned out to be false?

I'd understand if I was one of the ND bashers, but hell I don't bash any team/player at all on this board.

Correct. And even though OSU earns $13 million for playing in the Rose Bowl this year they don't actually get that money, the conference does. The conference collects all of the bowl money and distributes it evenly among all the member of the conference. So even though OSU went 10-2, won the conference, and is playing in the Rose Bowl, they will actually get the exact same amount of money as Michigan, who finished 5-7 and next to last in the conference. Obviously OSU will make more because of merchandising, but as far as money paid out by the bowls, it'll be the same.

ND's contract puts them on par with what most major conference teams earn each year in bowl revenue. All major conferences evenly distribute bowl revenue.

Consider the following factors:

1) Florida loses a lot of starters, including Spikes and Tebow
2) Tennessee has been resurrected and looks to be coming back toward the top of the SEC
3) Notre Dame is looking for a coach after not one, but multiple consecutive duds
4) The numbers being thrown out for Meyer are insane...I've heard anywhere from $6 to $8 million a year plus incentives
5) Meyer is from Ashtabula, went to UC and Ohio State, coached at St. X and Ohio State, and married a girl he met in Ohio

If just one or two of these held true, I can see him staying. But with all five....

If I were Notre Dame I'd offer him up to $7,500,000/year. He's worth every penny.

However, Meyer has stated before he wouldn't mind retiring at 50. I honestly don't see him coaching until he's gray, especially with his migraines he gets from coaching with passion.

In my opinion, NO college football coach is worth $6.3 million per year. However, it the totally out of whack society in which we live, and with the salaries paid to top FBS coach's, I would say Meyer is worth the $6.3 million per year he receives at UF.

If ND wants Meyer this may be their best and only chance. Losing Tebow along with I believe is their entire Defense means that Florida will be rebuilding next year. Now FLorida rebuilding is realistically not the same as everyone else rebuilding, but as previously mentioned, the gap seems to be closing between them and the rest of the SEC. I also heard a report that Charlie Strong may be the next coach at Loiusville.

All of this means that Florida could very well have a tougher time coming up than they are used to having on the football field. The question is "Does Meyer want to go through that?"
