Many times the coach is the fall guy. You hire a guy to coach football, and you expect him to have a pulse on the personal lives of not only 100+ players, but also all the recruits? Let's be honest, if you're not committing secondary violations, you're not trying.

The dispatch article points out that compliance was doing their best to hide stuff rather than stop it from happening.

Interesting from 10tv...

http://www.10tv.com/live/content/teninvestigates/stories/2011/07/15/story-ohio-state-university-athlete-car-repair.html?sid=102

Hard to believe they would even touch this in April with all that was going on. It will be interesting to see how this is explained.

I think it's funny how everyone just keeps trying so hard to stretch this out. Like $8 phone calls. Lol gtfo

I wonder if the NCAA thinks paying for player car repairs with funds meant for other things is funny?

It doesn't say what the list for funds is. Sounds like theirs no REAL guidelines for it either. Just more "I hope I found something" stories.

It's a discretionary fund provided by the Big Ten. The guidelines are pretty broad.

I'm really getting tired of all this digging and "I may have gotcha" stories.

August can't get here soon enough.

I'm sure nothing will come of it. I am just sort of surprised they would be doing this while the NCAA is in town. I really doubt player car repairs fall under the acceptable uses for the funds.

It seems like it is the local media who is trying to pile on now. And isn't 10tv owned by the Dispatch?

I'm not saying this will be the case with OSU at all, but this reminds me a lot of the SMU case where all of the Dallas media outlets were TRYING to bring the giant down.

I understand the national media trying to find a story, because people will read it. But I do not understand the local media doing it.

Simple answer is the local media doesn't want to appear/be labeled as OSU's lapdog...pretty simple really.

Lol. What should the local media do? Cover its ears and act like nothing is happening? If they want to be taken seriously, then they have to report news and dig.

Local media is who got Michigan busted a couple years ago.

This is a face saving effort by the local media. They've been upstaged by some of the national folks (although I'd argue the stuff the national media has "found" isn't worth crap) so they feel compelled to make themselves "relevant" again.

It's a futile effort, I think. The stuff that's being "found" is more than likely stuff the NCAA has already looked at and had no problem with. The whole employee evaluation story is only about piling on the "JT was out of control" meme the national media has tried to sell. But if you get beyond the headlines, you see he got dinged a couple times and then mostly got rave reviews. Of course, people won't remember that, they'll remember the headline stuff.

I'd love to see any other top 20 program (sorry UM :-) ) go through the anal probe OSU has been put through these past six months. I'd bet most of them wouldn't stand up very well to the scrutiny.

Oh well...come on August!

That's what my previous post was about. It seems like it's the local media that ends up doing the most damage.

10 TV is reporting that Tressel says he reported the tattoo tips to compliance a month before they claim...
