I think there needs to be a playoff to decide the champion for the main reason that I believe you can't tell anything about a team from early season games.
Early BIG TIME non conference games are not a great measure of a team. I'd rather have team schedule all cupcakes if there was a playoff system.
USC beat OSU, but if these teams played today it wouldn't be close IMO with the way OSU is playing and the way USC is.
Boise beat Oregon, but if these teams played today it wouldn't be close IMO with the way Oregon's playing.
It takes more than a few weeks for these teams to really get rolling.
I'm definitely in favor of a playoff system that uses BCS rankings as well: 8 teams, 6 automatic bids (BCS conferences) 2 at large bids and use BCS standings for seeding.
This year the playoff would be.
#1 Alabama vs. #8 Georgia Tech
#2 Texas vs. #7 Ohio State
#3 TCU vs. #6 Oregon
#4 Cinci vs. #5 Boise State
Obviously bowl logistics are a huge issue, so it would be as follows, in my own little world.
First round of games: December 20th-ish weekend. All upper seeds host home games
2nd round (Final four): The following weekend. Game sites are 2 BCS bowl locations
Championship: the following weekend. A third BCS venue
The final BCS venue could host a game between the highest remaining BCS teams. This year that would be Florida vs. probably Iowa.
In my system, all of the other bowl games can occur, all 4 BCS venues are used, and the four highest seeds can host home games.
Florida is not going to fall past #4, so in your playoff, if you include all of the BCS conference champions, Boise State would be left out. LOL
