Geez! It's like a Wrestling Coaches Anonymous meeting in here!

Hi. I'm Cruiser_96. I have a great deal of passion for my alma mater, and roughly same amount for the sport of wrestling AND the principles it teaches. I got into coaching because I don't want kids to turn out like me! I also don't want my school to be the punchline of any jokes. So, what better way to avoid kids turning out like me than to teach them the opposite of what made me, me!?! What better way to get my school on a better path than to get involved!?

Along the way I've met amazing parents, better kids and some of the greatest human beings I may ever meet in the coaches of other schools.

Well that's my story. 4x sectional qualifiers, unite.

Not complaining about coaching or wrestling, just got to know when to put priorities in line. This is strictly for me as a man. As far as what any other man does, that is fine with me, Just putting my stance out there. I can confidently say some of the best times of my life have been in or around wrestling, whether it be competing, or coaching. Guiding young kids that have no clue what to do is pretty exciting. I just think that when I have a chance to have a family, I would not be able to be involved on the head coaching level. I really don't think there is anyway I won't be on the wrestling mat at some point. I have a real desire to coach and help in the sport that guided my whole life. The longest I have been off the mats in 20 years was 8 or 9 months, and that was due to injury. So I got that going for me.... Anywho, I want to be able to share that passion with my family, and that will mean more time with them in the future IMO.

I think most coaches (myself included) struggle with the following
There are 24 hours in a day
If you are a teacher you spend 8 hours in this position (your actual job), most I know spend beyond this on work outside of the classroom, and frankly I don't know how you get it all done if you don't.
If you have a family you want to spend time with the people you love
If you are coaching wrestling it's because you love the sport, but as HS sports have changed to be competitive (we all want our kids to have a measure of quantitative success) it is no longer a 4 month job, saying 10 months is a conservative assessment.
So what happens you end up spending a disproportionate amount of time with, for lack of better terms, with your hobby. Knowing full well that by doing so you are making personal sacrifice for others children all the while not spending time with your own.

Keep in mind I am the son of a coach, I spent every Saturday in the winter as long as I can remember in a gymnasium, and wouldn’t have traded it for anything usually riding the bus in the wee hours of the morning. Heck when I was 6 I found out there wasn’t a Santa Clause b/c of the stories being told on the bus.

However my mom was usually at the same tournament, as were my brothers, it was our family time. I went to practice every day after school and the wrestling stats helped me with my homework. That doesn’t work for every family in fact now my kids wouldn’t be allowed to ride the bus or come to practice. The fact is just don’t see as many coaches doing this for as long as they did 10,20,30 years ago.

Hamilton Township has a new coach Jason Hackett he is a life long Ranger he was a State Champ at HT also took 3rd 2 times and was a SR National Champion all at 171 and had a career record of 214-11.

This is a great move for the school he lives for the sport and will work hard to get the team back to a State level.
Congrats Jason and good luck cant wait to see what you do with the team.

Jason Hackett was a beast (and I'm sure he still is). That senior season when he took third, it was one of the best brackets in OHAA history. It's always great when you can get a champion alumni to come back a head up a program. I wish him well.

It is a big challenge to juggle the coaching (basically a second job) with family. You figure...on 3 point tournament weeks, you are working another 35 hours on top of your "day" job. It becomes very, very tough to spend quality time. For us, Sundays are golden and we try to have dinner as a family every night we don't have a competition. For now, that works.


I am interested to see who gets the Grandview job....that seems to be a plum gig with lots of potential.

Yeah. Andy D. has been coaching (I think) for 20+ years. The run has to end some time.

Got ya, thanks. I knew he had been there quite some time I just wasn't sure if there was something that happened or he just decided to hang it up.

Wasn't Dan Staats (former State Champion from Norton High School) the coach at NW?

Dan Statts gave up the coaching duties five years ago at Northwest he is currently coaching the youth at Norton. Dave Tolarchyk was our current head coach, dave resigned to spend time coaching his two boys who are involved in the Jackson youth program, and i might say those two boys will be a couple of good ones one day. dave did an outstanding job. The program is in a rebuilding stage with a handful of some serious contenders next year. someone will walk into a real nice sitiuation at Northwest.

Upper Arlington is Open.

Shoulder is too jacked up to get on the mat, just had a second child, and broke up my law-firm so employment is uncertain for next year.

The final reasons that opened the job are that the program is set up for a nice 10-15yr run and a coach that is willing/able to do it right can hit it out of the park. In the best interests of my alma mater, it seemed responsible for the program to open it up at this time. UA should have 4-6 St.Q nxt year (with only 2 of them seniors) and has several sets of brothers nicely staggered coming up through an excellent youth program with some legit studs.

The admin is very supportive of the program, they are redoing the entire wrestling room (a dedicated room) with permanent practice mats and purchased new competition mats. UA has Two middle-schools that alternate in excellence and a supportive and inclusive wrestling booster club of parents. I’ll help as I can—or completely stay out of the way…no ego concerns.

It’s all there for a return to the mid-late ‘80s standard that Spitz established and can be a top-five year-in year-out program.
