They were making a profit at $2 a gallon because oil was a lot cheaper. Now that oil is more expensive, they need to charge more for gasoline in order to maintain their target profit margin. Is this really that complicated to understand?

but until oil and gas are taken off of the NYMEX. you really can't bitch. because literally nothing can be done about it. if oil companies were allowed to set the price of their oil, Chevron would give all their oil to Chevron pipeline company for free and charge Shell pipeline company $300 per barrel for it. in turn Chevron pipeline would give it to the Chevron refinery for free and charge the other refineries a shitload. then chevron refinery would give it to the Chevron gas station for free and sell it for whatever the fair market value deemed it should be. as it stands all the oil i produce from my platform gets sold to 1 of 2 pipleines (neither of which are owned by my company) and that oil can go to any number of refineries depending on availability. everything is so set right now you can't do any of that

I think what I am saying I am saying wrong, again I know how gas prices work and the point I am making is they give these bullshit reasons to raise the price of oil causing gas to go up and again making more profit! Could it be $2 a gallon, hell yes if they wanted it to be so, if it couldn't, prices wouldn't decline then go back up and down, etc...all the time. They make up whatever they want to get us when they want to get us!!

I'm not all into the political/economical side of things, but:

1) $5/gallon gas is ridiculous. It's ridiculous for everyone, but it's going to kill me considering I'm a broke college kid making $7.77/hour.

2) I find it even more ridiculous that we have all of this technology, yet it's 2011 and we're still dependent on foreign oil. We can send a guy to the moon but can't get ourselves off the oil teet of the Middle East? Really? You had to figure we'd be rolling in cars 100% powered by electricity, solar energy, urine, dog shit, or something by now.

3) I really wish all of the citizens would collectively say 'fuck this shit' and do something about it. No one buy gas on a particular day. Or just blockade every gas station on a particular day. The reason the prices always find their way back up is because the oil companies know we're so embedded to our 'slave to the grind' lives that we won't do shit about it. If gas is $5 and I need gas to get to my shitty 9-5 job or else my family and myself might not be able to eat, then god damn we'll bend over, spread our ass cheeks, and pay the $5.

We're dependent on it because it's so cheap. You can't simultaneously expect cheap gas and an alternative; we'll develop alternatives when gas isn't so cheap. If you want to be free of middle eastern oil, you should be cheering for higher gas prices.

There are plenty of things that can be done to mitigate the high cost of gasoline....move closer to work, buy a more fuel efficient car, consolidate trips, walk or ride a bike short distances.

How would not buying gas on one particular day do anything? If people really want to say "fuck this shit", then they would never buy gas again. That is the only way.

sleeper is a jackass, but he's right about the "not buying gas for a day" thing. People would just buy twice the gas the following day.

Yes, because people bitching about paying $1-2 more for gas have the free income to just up and fucking move. Posts like this piss me off. If I can't afford to buy $5 gas, how the fuck am I going to buy a new car or move to a new house?

Yes, I know our gas prices are much more affordable here than in Europe and other places right now, but $5 gas isn't very cheap to me at the moment with my job, limited work hours due to school, commute, and bills. And there's a lot of people who are worse off than myself. Yes, that is nice and all that we have cheaper gas than Europe, but then again, that's their problem since their government decided to put insane taxes at the pump.

And why should anyone have to cheer for higher gas prices just to get more alternatives and get us free of a dependency on oil? It's just common sense to look for and create better alternatives. We're dependent on a non-renewable resource. Common sense says get yourself off that dependency before it screws you in the long run.

I hate it just as much as the next person...but just be glad we're not paying European gas prices.

Do you live on campus? How far do you gave to drive to work? My daughter will be living on campus so I will not be providing her with a car and no way she will be able to afford one anytime soon. She will walk, bike, or use public transportation. Bottom line is you will have to make some changes.

Gas was just over a buck when I was in college and I bitched all the time when I put gas in it. Don't think I ever had enough money to fill the whole tank. I ate a lot of baloney. Can hardly stand deer baloney. My roommate and his Dad got themselves a couple of deer during gun season and we had our freezer packed with the shit. It got old but we ate it. I might add a restaurant is a great place to work in. Always plenty of food around. I did always find a way to scrounge up enough each weekend for a case of keystone.

Nope, I commute 30 miles one way to school. My house to Wright State. Back during my freshman year I decided to commute for financial reasons and because I'm needed at home to help my parents and grandmother. Damn me.

Damn you? That is why I ask. If gas goes to $5 you will have to make some changes. You may not like what changes you will need to make. You will get by and I am sure end up quite successful at some point.
