I always considered marriage a joke, so I guess it's only fitting that I propose to my girlfriend on April Fools Day this evening.

I know I will get hammered for doing this b/c of all the things I've said in the past... so I'll take it.

But mostly b/c the Catholic church's Tribunal wont seek a Dissolution of Bond without a serious intent to marry (ie: we have to get engaged first) ... That's the reasoning for the engagement or i'd probably prolong it a little bit. (It will take around 8 months I'm told to hear back from Rome.)

Not always. If you marry someone who's really independent, and you make it clear that such behavior isn't going to work (which goes both ways), then it doesn't have to be that way.
