I'm looking to get a really nice camera for deployment later this summer.

I currently have a "decent" Olympus point and shoot. It takes good pics but I want one for all the port visits and floating around I'll be doing for 8 months.

I don't know much about cameras but I do know I want something that will zoom and take great pics with the ability to make decent size pics to frame (larger than 8x10)

I don't know if I should go with a higher end Point and Shoot digital or a beginner Digital SLR camera.

What's the pros/cons of both.

How hard is it to operate a Digital SLR?

Entry level SLR's are easier then some point and shoot just cause the shutter is so much faster. And most lens have an autofocus.

If you play on the water get a Canon D10
http://cgi.ebay.com/Canon-PowerShot-D10-12-1-MP-Waterproof-Digital-Camera-/250754427853?pt=Digital_Cameras&hash=item3a6220ebcd

it takes great pics under water and above. Good video. Auto settings or program.

I buy from Adorama, great prices and customer service.

Wow must be nice to have an ass easy job if you want a good camera for a deployment. Make sure you take you're fucking swimsuit as well with some sun block while you're floating around.

When the Marines deploy they aren't buying expensive cameras to see ports. I'm guessing it was a little tongue in cheek but from Tiger's perspective it understandably might not be.

How much combat action will you see? How many times will you be shot at? Is there a fear of seaside bombs now?

Are you seriously asking this question? I'm not arguing with people about my fucking job and what we do. You have no idea what goes on, on a daily basis being on a ship out to sea.

Isn't there a reason the navy is referred to as semen?

Also, when your location says floating around San Diego, sounds like you have it pretty cushy to me....just saying there are a lot worse places you could be floating than southern cali haha

When I opened this thread, I didn't think it would go in this direction. Really sad.

Anyways, My friend has a Canon G12 as his point and shoot and loves it. He uses it when he doesn't want to lug around his Canon 7D or 1D.

Ok, so she's stationed in San Diego. Why hold that against her when she's getting ready to be deployed to who knows where? She won't be floating around Souther California then.

Was just saying I agree with Tiger's sarcastic reaction. I know you will never see combat action because 1. you are a woman and 2. you are in the navy.
Is rough not being able to eat box? Im confused to how you have it rough when the only worries you have are being outed and not falling off the big ass boat.

If you think Navy people don't see combat action think again. You have no idea what goes on, on a ship to say we have it easy.

She wants pictures bigger than 8x10. Even though this is a good camera, I have it myself, it is not a good recommendation for her needs.

You can get much bigger prints than 8x10 with a D40.
