That's why I'm not an expert.

Now back to the subject at hand.

Oh by the way have fun at the ports in South America. I hear you will see alot of action down there. Also enjoy your 3 meals a day and a bed to sleep in every night.

Anyone have any experience or opinion on the NIKON d3100? It seems to be a good entry level dslr.

Envy...and it's geared towards a volunteer enlisted person. The Secretary of the Navy oversees all jar-heads...all of them. Rank has it's privileges and for all the good marines do for us to hear them knock another enlisted branch takes the luster off of the medals hanging by the fruit salad.

Bravo Zulu ytowngirl. Don't ever give up the ship.

My mom just bought that model a few months ago and it's a great camera. There are some deals floating around that can net you the camera and two VR lenses for about $700.

I've seen the deals online and in eBay around that price range. How easy is it to use? I'm going tonight to play with one at our Exchange here. I've never played with a dslr before so I may also go to ritz camera to talk to a camera expert.

Very easy to use. I used a D3000 which is basically the same except for MP's. Just make sure any lens you get has autofocus and its as easy as pie ...lol

I have the Nikon D3000. It was the replacement for the D40, which is now discontinued.

The main difference between the D3000 and the D3100 is the megapixels and the D3100 shoots 1080HD movies (which we didn't need).

We got the D3000 with a 55mm lens @ Sams Club for $399. It was still that price the other day in store. It's a good deal, takes great pictures. We bought the 55-200mm lens also for $200 @ Micro Center (they price matched best buy).

I am a huge fan of Nikon. We have a small point and shoot and also my wife has a D300. The D300 is a bad-ass camera. I would also suggest getting a polarizing filter if you are going to be shooting a bunch of stuff outside. It really makes the blue sky pop.
