Also, how did it kill more than 2,500 more? The official death toll for Katrina was roughly 1850. So, only negative lives were killed in Japan?

At this time, they are saying more than 10,000.

Let's see....that's more than 5 X's MORE than Katrina.

No LOL please...this is a huge disaster that is considerably bigger than Katrina. 8.9 Earthquakes and tsunamis are way bigger than hurricaines....and there was no warning.

So that the ignorance doesn't continue...some facts:
Japan is roughly the same size as California, but over 126 million people are packed into it. The mountainous interior is relatively sparsely populated while a great majority of the people live near the coastlines.
The city of Sendai is over a million people and is devastated...hundreds of thousands are homeless...and the death toll is 10,000.

I just love how people in the USA are rushing to send aid to Japan when we have flooded places in Ohio, and the northeast like New Jersey that need it first... flipping amazing.

Come on, don't even act like that is similar. There will be 10's of thousands dead if they don't get basic food, water, blankets, etc. There is plenty of aid and money here, our government is just too stupid to be able to get it there fast enough.

Yeah FEMA is all messed up ever since the DOD jumblefucked everything up. The major problem with all this is the weather...it's basically the same as it is here in Northern Ohio. I couldn't imagine sitting around in this weather outside all day

The global economic impact this will have will be astounding. And because it isn't about America no one cares. Seriously for Haiti everyone was up in arms over and this gets relatively no attention in comparison. Amazing.

We might disagree about basketball, but good lord it is nice to know there is a sane person out there that 'gets it'. This is huge. Catastrophic implications for the entire world. They might shut down their trading as a result.

But why should we care about Japan? Did Japan help us when they bombed us at Pearl Harbor? No. Did Japan send supplies to New Orleans after Katrina? No.

Im not going to say we shouldn't help other countries in times of need, but I do think it is kind of pointless because the majority of the world hates us and we have plenty of problems in our own country (4 trillion dollars in debt or whatever it is now). I also don't recall any other countries helping us in our times of need. Could be wrong though.

Not many countries adopt our philosophy of bombing a country and then cleaning it up.

No one should have sent money (I sure as hell didn't) to a bunch of people who A) lived in a giant hole by the ocean B) Had at least 3 days notice to leave, maybe more C) Well there is no C.

Hurricane Katrina doesn't even hold a candle to what Japan is going through.

And we shouldn't help people who live on an ISLAND on a fault line, in the ring of fire, and had their whole life to move.

The island is at least not a hole in the ground! Bottom line is Japan effects our economy greatly. Haiti didn't effect 0.0000001% of our economy and we gave them about 5x what they needed in money.

Haiti affected 0% of our economy. Japan is rich enough that they can handle their own problems, we have enough of our own.

No Japan is really a huge economic power and also I mean I know we're in debt but it's good humanity to help out people in those types of situation. Besides they helped us out with a few million for Katrina and that's not close to the same level of this. The nuclear aspect of this has added a whole other nature to the disaster. Also Japan is basically like the US economically with the average GDP per person at $42,000

Japan gave $500k to the US for Katrina. Re-read the "we're in debt" until you fully understand what that means. We are broke, all the money we are giving is coming from China anyway, let them handle it.

Ha well I don't blame em for not giving us money...it all woulda been looted! With that being said they NEED the manpower we're sending over since they already have 100k troops sorting through the rubble and such

On a lot of topics I tend to at least lean your way, but not on this one. Where are you getting your numbers on the "Japan gave $500K to the US for Katrina."? Are you strictly talking about cash and only the government?

I feel for the Japanese people but I also feel for the American people who will suffer the consequences of endless borrowing. If you're an American and you want to help Japan, go for it! Donate as much as you want for the cause, just leave my tax dollars out of it.

And honestly, Japan holds about 900 billion of our total debt. It doesn't make sense that we borrow money from Japan to help Japan.

Japan is one country i don't have a problem sending aid to. and given the gravity of this disaster, i'm not sure i'd be opposed to helping anyone.
