As long as you have 1 tub in the house you are fine in your area. I say go with the shower only upstairs. Even though it's technically 1&3/4bath you can still list it as a 2 bath home. Get a nice vanity that has some storage if you can fit it in there and have the money for it.
The people looking for a nice tub to relax in are going to be people looking for large suburban homes with big master baths for the most part IMO. Squeezing a small tub in there isn't really catering to anyone for future resale.

I installed a smaller (3/4-sized) tub in a remodel once. It worked out great. Qualified as a full-sized bath upon resale. I'd go that route upstairs Justin.

This is an old thread but I've got some decently good news (for us, none of you will give a shit). After seeing our neighbors newly remodeled bathroom I am planning on knocking the wall down between the upstairs bathroom and our laundry room portion of our master closet to make a big master bath/closet combo. We currently have separate washer and dryer but to make this work we'll get a stacked unit to save floor space and it will just be in the master bathroom.

I don't see why any tub is necessary unless your are 70 years old. Who takes baths? We combined a half bath and small bedroom to make one big ass bathroom/closet/laundry. It's on the second floor but not connected to our master. It's my favorite room in our house. Everyone I show our house to loves it. We didn't put in a tub, just a really big shower and I have not missed the tub at all.
The only advice I will give you is to get it finished as fast as you can. My hubby got a quick start then started dragging his feet towards the end. We had totally renovated our whole house without any fighting, but we did nothing but argue about this bathroom.

That's one thing we haven't decided on yet. The current 2nd floor bath is just a 2nd floor bath. If we know down that wall we can close off the current door and make it a master bath. But my wife is afraid the lack of a 2nd floor bath would hurt the resale. She thinks we should keep the door in the hallway. Not sure what would be better, but I think having a big master suite is a better selling feature.

I'm not 70 and I use the whirlpool in our master bath frequently. It's a separate unit from the shower in our bathroom.
