A lot of IF programs aren't a day long. They can be a 16-20 hour fast, maybe like 6PM dinner the night before to 1 PM lunch the day after. This would be 19 hours for example. Then, you might eat a decent lunch and then a massive dinner (biggest meal of the day), followed by a snack before bed around 9 or 10.
This has worked for me when I've wanted to really refine body composition. However, lets say I did this 3 times a week, on average those times after the fast usually included the lunch, dinner and snack that could be upwards of 3,000-4,000 calories, if not more depending on the amount of fat. So, in standard breakdown, my weekly caloric intake would NOT be restricted, and likely it would be more than the RDA. However, when combined with training and timing, it still can lead to fat loss. That's usually the whole goal of IF, NOT to simply restrict calories.
