On one hand, you can never go wrong getting the best player in a deal, which the Nets far and away got. But on the flip side, the Nets are going nowhere anytime soon and they gave up a lot of future pieces. Plus Devin Harris, who is a quality starter. Who do the Nets even have on their team now besides Deron Williams and an underperforming Brook Lopez? That Nets first round draft pick is probably going to be a top 5 pick. And are there any big time free agents coming out over the next year or so that the Nets could lure to New Jersey/Brooklyn? I know Howard and CP3 are going to be hitting the market soon. I think the Nets kind of panicked and wanted to make a splash after losing out on Melo. But on the flip side they now have that face of the franchise that can help recruit players to New Jersey/Brooklyn that Brook Lopez/Devin Harris could never be. Overall, good trade.
I think this was a response to the Knicks trade. To me this is a trade that suggests that the Nets think they can use Williams to recruit guys to come to NJ. They did give up a lot in this trade though. They better hope Williams can recruit.
From a brand standpoint this helps the Nets as well. They now have a marketable player who can be the face of the team. Harris and Lopez aren't really "face of franchise" guys and the team wasnt going anywhere with that combo headlining anyways.
