So my 25 year old washer took a crap on me last night so I need to upgrade. My dryer which is also 25 years old has issues as well so I think I'm over due for new ones. Having never bought either of these appliances what should I look for in new ones; brand, front load vs. top load, energy star rated, load capacity, etc.. I need all the advice I can get before I head out to the stores.

Not much advice, but I would check appliance smart. You can get some really good deals on scratch and dent stuff. If your washer or dryer is in the basement who cares what it looks like?

I have a nice fridge that is all banged up on the side, but that side is against a wall so nobody sees it.

First - you will never ever get a washer / dryer to last 25+ years again. This is now a throw away society and the things are made to brake and then it ultimately becomes a situation where it will cost you more to repair than fix. That being said, I would not buy junk but I certainly would not buy high end.

Go for the front load high efficiency, it will likely be a bit more expensive and the detergent is also more, but it is worth it. We have LG for both the washer and dryer and have been very happy with their performance.

I will second the high efficiency ones.

Also, worth noting is that you can haggle with Lowes/Home Depot. Most don't, but I was talking to a guy at work who ALWAYS haggles with them. You might to have a peon go grab a manager, but you can haggle them down on most appliances.

I got a front loader HE washer/dryer last year and I love it. SOOOO much more quiet than the old fashioned ones, too!
We have been experimenting with the various HE detergents and so far I think we'll stick with Tide.

Dryer - be sure to get one with a humidity sensor option - it will cut down power use by 15-20% by drying "just long enough".

Yea when we turn the dryer on it always says 41 minutes. But it shuts off when everything is dry.
