I'm with dave...especially against the Phillies teams aren't going to move up their rotations often becasue they are loaded with #1's

Often the Phillies will be on say game #58 and their opponents are on game 56 or 60.....

about half the teams started on a thursday and half on friday so that already messed up everything for the #1s. Just wait til the end of the year and look at everything. The first few starts of the year and first few after the break will this idea will hold true, but after that it's just coincidence.

I understand that, but a majority of the teams that started the season on Thursday were off Friday. Either way, teams used their first 3 starters in the opening series, which ended on Sunday. (I know there may have been a few 4 game opening series, but there weren't many.) I do know that the Braves have had off days fall where they have skipped their 5th starter for 3 straight turns through the rotation. I don't know what each team has done with their off days/5th starters, but I would guess the majority keep their first 4 on regular rest and the 5th guy is often skipped.

if they started on thursday, 1s would pitch thurs, tues, sun etc. if they started on fri 1s would pitch fri, wed, mon etc. That's why I said only 1s would be messed up. just wait til the end of the year.

look at a guy like CC who is out there every 5th no matter what. i bet he's faced plenty of back end guys as well as aces.

I know CC has faced Beckett 3 times already. In 2007 he beat Johan Santana 4 times I think.

Id guess a #1 faces a #1 and #2 close to 70% of the starts. Then a #3 15% a #4 10% and #5 5%.

Beckett started the 4th game for the BoSox this year, it was the Indians home opener. Pure luck they matched up 3 times.

Id say Jair is the only guy above Cole on the depth chart, and you can argue he is the #3 (Hanson and Hudson). Sanchez is also probably the #3 for Florida, maybe #2.

Does that figure only into the win/loss column though?

Doesn't affect the other stats at all...if anything one could slightly argue that facing a top pitcher gets you a little more up and focused for the contest.

Felix Hernandez won the CY by completely ignoring the win/loss column. I hate to ignore the stat cause a starting pitchers job is to win..and preferably eat up 7 or 8 innings in doing so.

Oh I agree with that. My whole point was Cole was already an Ace for most teams, and he would have the numbers anyway. But now he will get maybe 20-25 wins because he is facing pitchers the Phils will eat up. I figured hed have the most wins, with comparable numbers to the other 3...which would be a direct correlation to who he faced, imo.

If he does...he deserves it. Hamels did his stuff all the way to the end of the World Series.

No one will win 20+ and not deserve it.

Except maybe the extreme steroid year cheater Clemens went 20-3 and 7 of his wins were against the atrocious Devil Rays....that same year Mike Mussina was nearly as good but never got any run support like Clemens and didn't get to feast on the Devil Rays and I think went 17-7 and not even considered in the Cy debate.

In 2001 Mussina and Clemens were both on the Yankees

Mussina had more innings, more strikeouts, lower ERA, gave up fewer hits, way fewer walks, way lower WHIP and 3 shutouts compared to Clemens 0

Clemens won the CY and Mussina was 5th or 6th....I really wish they looked deeper into the stats back then.

Records that year: Clemens 20-3 (3.51)

Mussina 17-11 (3.19)

Florida: they've completely collapsed. They were right there with the Phillies and ahead of the Braves just a few weeks ago. Currently, they're 32-34, Josh Johnson has been put on the 60-day DL and they're currently losing 8-1 to the Phillies thanks to a starting pitcher who needed 92 pitches to struggle through three innings of eight-run ball because he walked five and gave up five hits. EDIT: He also hit one guy.

The Phillies have homered 6 times in two games vs the Fish, 5 of which came in the 1st games. Game 3 is being played tonight as part of a day night doubleheader.

The Fish have only scored 2 runs while the Phillies have touched home plate 17 times.
