The Rays had just a 0.3 percent chance of coming back after trailing 7-0 with two innings to play.
The Red Sox had only about a 2 percent chance of losing their game against Baltimore, when the Orioles were down to their last strike.
The Rays had about a 2 percent chance of winning in the bottom of the 9th, with Johnson also down to his last strike.
[/INDENT]Multiply those four probabilities together, and you get a combined probability of about one chance in 278 million of all these events coming together in quite this way.

Did you see the pitchers they used, especially in the 8th and later? Best closer in history and an off day the next day and he doesn't pitch. Same with Robertson. Then they left proctor in for how many innings?

They were winning. Doesnt mean they played to win. The gave EVERYONE on the postseason roster pitching wise the night off. That aint playing to win. They took their starter out having only given up 1 hit through like 3 innings. I mean, they did everything to lose on the mount. They played their un-banged-up regulars at the plate, and they came through. Again, that isnt meaning they are playing to win though.

like_that, good call on the Rays this year. Remember when you said the system was broken and that they weren't making the playoffs because they lost Garza and Crawford.

The average payroll ranking for the teams that made the playoffs was roughly 14th

The Yanks and Phils ranked 1,2 and they both made it, but after them the next highest paid team that made it was the Tigers (10th). The Rays and D'backs ranked 29th and 25th respectively.

As soon as I saw you posted, I knew you were going to try to rehash this argument. Rays did surprise me, but it still took an epic collapse (see the worst collapse in history) for them to make it. You are only kidding yourself if you think big market teams are not at an advantage over the smaller market teams. I never said small market teams can't make the playoffs (nice fail), however they have a much smaller time frame to make the playoffs, and then win a title. The Rays have taken advantage of their small time frame, but I don't expect them to be in the AL East argument down the line.

Small time frame? For the Rays? They made the World Series in 2008? They made the playoffs last season as well? 3 of the past 4 years they have been in the playoffs.

Most NFL, NBA, and MLB teams would kill for that kind of sustained success.

Did you not notice the part where I said the Rays have taken advantage of that time frame? Just like the A's did in the early 2000's. SMH, nice fail.
