Same as shortening...really!? Wtf, lol, etc. are actually abbreviations for something. Did I miss where of started to stand for have? If you want to shorten it type wouldve. Same amount of letters. Let's be honest here...anyone that does this isn't doing it because it's shorter and easier to type. It's because they are a complete idiot that doesn't know simple grammar rules that you learn in elementary school.

And I'm not on my period but it wouldn't matter if I was. Never had PMS (that actually stands for something, too) a day in my life.

The one that bugs me is people using "Then" instead of "than." Ex: I am feeling better then ever.

As I understand it, single-quotes function differently in this respect, though. Am I not correct in that?

That's correct O-Trap, and Krambman. Single function quotes are different from normal quotations in that you do not have to include punctuation inside the quotation marks. For example:

Who said "to thine own self be true"?

So basically, this occurs maybe 1% of the time in the English language. If you have something different like this, then yes, the question mark will go outside the quotation marks because you are using a quotation in a sentence that asks a question, but the quotation ends the sentence and is not part of the question-asking. Basically, the question mark is left outside the quote marks because it is referring back to the "Who said" part of the sentence, and not 'owned' by the quotation enclosed in the sentence. Whew!

Lol and yes, I have an English degree. And I still post horribly incorrect grammatical stuff all the time, because honestly, when you edit stuff like this all day long, you just don't care! But I'm on Fab's side, some stuff on here drives me insane.
