I've always thought that it seems odd to never have punctuation outside of quotation marks, but that is indeed the rule.

No, you didn't "seen" anything. You saw. Or you are seeing. Nobody "seens" anything.

Winner!

Nothing screams "redneck" quite as much as "I seen." I literally want to punch babies when I hear / see people use "seen" incorrectly.

I was almost an English major in college, so simple grammar mistakes are one of my biggest pet peeves. It is easily the most annoying thing on message boards. Usually if a post has multiple mistakes I don't finish reading it.

Indeed. I even have to correct it here at work with professional letter writers.

As I understand it, single-quotes function differently in this respect, though. Am I not correct in that?

I hope this is correct. I'm about to use the hell out of some single-quotes.

I don't have issue with any of it until someone employs the "cc" response as an excuse for it, and of course when it involves irony.

Almost? I almost went to Med School. It is nearly impossible for me to walk into a Hospital because of all the mistakes I see being made.

Yeah. I laugh at the ironic "YOUR AN IDIOT" ones. The only grammar mistakes that really bother me are when someone writes a lengthy trainwreck of a post that is, at best, barely readable. Also known as "thickthinbigred syndrome".

I agree. As long as I can understand what someone is trying to say, I don't have a problem with anyone's grammar. If you want perfect grammar, maybe the internet is not the place you should be looking? :)

Not looking for perfect anything. Obviously mine isn't even close to it. Of instead of have, though? That shouldn't be acceptable. Ever.

I'm not trying to tell you what your pet peeves can be, but some people here take it to far. :) I think I say "should of," (Is that correct with the comma inside the quotes? It looks weird to me.) When I mean "should have". I think I would type "should have" but I'm not 100% positive.

When you actually speak it, it sounds like should of. But when you write/type it out, it is should have.
