What can I say about it? Hiland played really good and Malvern didn't match up too well. Both teams played hard. But in the end, anyone can say whatever they want to say about the score - and I'm sure they will.

It sounds like Coach Schlabach needs to work on defense a little more. Allowing 33 points to the Lady Hornets. Are you kidding me? The chartered bus back home must have been awful quiet. Coach Hooten has the Lady Hornets program going in the right direction. They could even double their wins from a year ago.

Hiland is a power that will have a lot of big scores on their resume come tourney time.

I was at this game and it could have been 160-12 if Hiland wanted it to. They pulled press off very early and starters played little in second half. Coach S was mad when they shot the ball in last three minutes. Malverns young team scrapped, but this was never a game. The two guards for Hiland are sensational ball handlers and shooters. Before anyone calls me a homer....I was rooting for the team in green!

Is Hiland this good?

Hold on a second JLGhoops. Hiland pressed in the first quarter and led 31-6. Doing simple math, there is no way Hiland could have scored 160 points, or kept Malvern below 20 points. Let's not get carried away with the blinding love for the Lady Hawks of Hiland. They are very good. The best team in the IVC and perennially one of the best teams in state. But there is no way they could score 160 against the Lady Hornets of Malvern. And for that matter, any team the great Coach Hooten is in charge of.

Surprises me they scored 100. Dave frowns on that.

JJ, I was there too. You are applying the transitive property to a basketball game in that the assumption is that 31-6 translated over 4 quarters would equal a score of 124-24. But with the fatigue factor, mental and physical, that comes with the pressure Hiland can bring, I don't 160 was at all out of the question.

Fidmeister, we were sitting there thinking we were going to see a ball handling and passing drill the last quarter, but they played slow down and Dave allowed them to take open shots. At 3 minutes they shut it completely down. The press was pulled after 1 quarter, they didn't score any fast-break points in the 4th, and a younger rotation was used in the second half.

Still we were surprised that they hit triple digits. It looked like they were just playing and that is where the game took them. It was the first game and Dave probably wanted to have some semblance of the rotation that they willl use this year. On the other hand, there were two things that really ticked Hiland off last year: the Wednesday night games and the IVC honors voting. I have no reason to think the score was motivated by those things, and I would think not because if it were I think it would have been closer to the 160.

Malvern is better comparing them to last year. Their skill level was better as was their effort. They were just playing against one of the deeper, experienced, and more talented Hiland teams. I think we all look forward to the day when a Hiland vs. any of the struggling programs is a competitive game in the fourth.

If it brings any comfort to the Hiland haters out there, they will have at least 2 opportunities to be on the wrong end of an ugly score. Against Potter's House and Regina, they could play well and still lose by 30, and if they don't play well...

I know about the issue with Wednesday games but basketball has always come first at hiland.

What was the issue with IVC honors?

Before district and state honors were given out, the IVC voted on their teams and player of the year. Hannah Patchan, who is a nice player, was voted POY by all coaches except Hiland and Garaway - who voted for Hilary Weaver - who was voted district and state DIV POY. When the state POY is not the POY in her own conference, something isn't quite right. I heard Dave stormed out of the meeting. I don't think Dave minds being sent a message by other coaches, but I think he would prefer they say what they have to say to him directly, and not indirectly in a way that deprives his girls of their just due.

It was so ridiculous and ticked everyone off who was close to the program. At the same time, Dave was taking a lot of criticism for winning 90-10 games. Some people lobbied for him to show folks what a classless blowout really looks like - just pick 1 game in the 09-10 season and just press and play all the way to the end. That way everyone would have a proper reference point since they couldn't get the fact that it took a good deal of restraint to have a margin as low as 90-10 in those games. The game at Malvern wasn't him doing that, but I don't think it bothers him as much to hang a hundred on some schools as it used to. Pending how other coaches treat his girls at the end of this year, I expect things will return to the way they have been next year.

Eh... gotta be hard to hold scores down with their depth and skill and both sides know that and I'm sure the kids will be just fine

but yea... 100 points seems to be that taboo... (why 100 is so much different than 99 I don't know... but I remember some Hiland people explaining how is was back in those threads on the Texas coach getting hired... don't seem to hear that from them now... but whatever)

I work with some Hiland fans and they say that Dave has used the whole 4th quarter as a passing drill so his team wouldn't score 100.

Buckeyedan, Don't know what you are talking about with the Texas coach. I doubt anyone was defending a coach who beat developmentally disabled kids by 150.

The truth is, you were one of the people on the other site piling on the criticism I was referring to, but I do appreciate the back pedal.

Last week Conotton Valley, who has had their brains beat out on plenty of occasions, beat a little Christian school 95-20, a wider margin than Hiland beat Malvern. That 95-20 score may have reflected a lot of restraint or it may have reflected pressing the whole game. I don't know because I wasn't there.

Bottom line: it's a competition. The opponent's duty is to score, your duty is to stop them. Beyond that, class is in the eye of the beholder. I think if someone is beating our brains out and hanging a hundred on us, then either they are just more talented than we are (so we shouldn't feel bad) or they just work harder at it (so we need to work as hard as they do). But most of the people who complain about these scores didn't see the game, and their suggestions as to what Team A should have done to make Team B feel better destroys the concept of competition.

Pariah, to be honest you are the one who is talking about the final score the most. Nobody is really coming down on Hiland scoring 100 on Malvern. For some reason, you have this built-up defense about the high-scoring Lady Hawks. We all know they could score 100 on a lot of schools. And we all know they don't because of Schlabach. So when they do, in a game they only pressed for one quarter, and in a game when the starters barely played in the second half, nobody is really criticizing Schlabach. You aren't really arguing with anyone on this thread, just with people in past threads on my site.

thank you... if you don't know who he is, you have to trust that jlg knows what he's talking about when it comes to Malvern hoops. I had hoped that a thread like this wouldn't come up, but consider the source... I wasn't able to be there but got many updates, and am going to trust jlg's (and thank him for his) assessment of the game. I trust Coach S and the rest of the staff completely, and I'm not going to defend them because they don't need it. haters will hate, and pot stirrers will continue to do so.

That's an AWESOME point and one that is exactly why you have to watch yourself...
since they scored 100... and the report that the other school was "developmentally disabled" was false (the schools web site touted they did a good job dealing with ADD)

SPIN and what people say are remember typically has NOTHING to do with what really happened!

MY whole issue was then and is now:
why is 100 some big deal?
if you win 99-10 it's fine
but 100-25 is bad...

it's laughable
(the thought that somehow nobody's feelings are hurt at 99-10 but are at 100-10... okay then... to me that's funny)

JJ, I didn't want the score posted or a thread started for Malvern's sake, their girls in particular. It's unnecessary. They need to wash that game out of their system and move on to their next opponent. I think they will win some games in conference this year, but they can't let one bad loss turn into other losses of winnable games. Lots of basketball to be played yet.

Malvern has been getting beat by Hiland by at least 70 points twice a year for a long time. They know how to handle this type of loss. It really doesn't bother the team or the community. What bothers the community is losses to Conotton Valley, Sebring, Lake Center..Teams that are beatable.
