How did Tuslaw and West Holmes look in the scrimmage? How was Tuslaw's passing game? How was West Holmes' running game?

I wish I could have gone to the scrimmage tonight, but boy did I have some fun playing in our softball tournament. Playing with only 9 guys (I love playing center field with room to roam), we won 13-4 and then lost 18-17 to the best team in the league. Ugh. Season's over. All football for me, now!

I am not your scoutting puppet...you should of came the the scrimmage which you committed to pryor to geigh softball

From my perspective, WH running game was not in form, I dont know if the Mackey kid played or not...but I expected a little horsepower....was NOT impressed.

Tuslaw had several QB's tossing the rock...some weak arms throwing lame ducks, but hitting their recievers...some strong arms throwing the ball on a rope.....just not to anyone in the area. They did actually find a groove on some patterns that Im not mentioning where they were able to get the passing game going and move the ball.

Im thinking Tuslaw scored on WH once. I dont think West Holmes found the end zone all night.

None of the teams were very impressive last night. The Knights looked sluggish up front in the trenches, which is why the running game never got on track. Backs did a poor job of hitting the crease when it was there, but they can fix those things today by looking at film. The Knights had 4 int's on defense which was their biggest area of concern, along with that o-line. Mackey was #27, plenty of carries last night, just nothing to get him untracked. However, base dives and off tackles, plus a few traps mixed in. Oh wait, that's the whole playbook. LOL

Bears are very small, not much size at all. They have decent team speed and played well as unit. Their numbers are very low too. I would think they'll match up well in the WCAL this year.

Overall, each team scores once on the night, which was dissapointing I'm sure for all coaches involved.

I wont be able to make it to the Dalton/Fairless scrimmage today. I would love to hear how it goes.

Bucyrus does not return Britt Cox, who was a great runner last year. He graduated. They do return a good number of players, perhaps 17 starters. I'm not sure who their primary running back will be this year...but they typically have at least one or two decent backs in the offense that Coach Bruner runs.

Bucyrus did NOT go 10-0 and miss the playoffs. They were 9-1 with the only loss to Wynford. They beat Galion that year (it was the year before Galion went 10-0). They also played Upper Sandusky that year and Ridgedale (from the MOAC in Marion County). Unfortunately for Bucyrus, Region 4-14 was stacked that season and the Redmen (Bucyrus) got no help from their out of conference schedule. Galion may have won 3 games or so; Upper only won one, I believe, as did Ridgedale. So basically no points from three games. Ouch.

Despite that, they were 9th in the region and only a few percentage points from getting in.

Since that time, Bucyrus has dropped to D-V so playing in the NCC "big" division allows them to play "up" against three foes: Upper, Galion and Ontario, all D-IV schools. Wynford is D-V and a powerhouse, as you all know. Bucyrus' other opponent this year is D-V Elgin from the MOAC in Marion County, a team that won at least 5 games a year ago.

Hillsdale has to be a prohibitive favorite in this game simply because of what the accomplished last season and the fact they return a good portion of that team. I will be very curious to see how much Bucyrus has grown up in a year, since they were very young a year ago, having lost something like 20 seniors (my nephew's class) the year before last. That class only lost 6 games in three years and 3 were to Wynford.

Good health to Hillsdale in this game and good luck in all your other matchups. Obviously, I'll be hoping for the upset when they play.

Smithville didnt look good at all. Running back got hurt.

In Dalton's first set of 10 offensive plays, they went exclusively out of the shotgun, and they only moved the ball 20 yards on 10 plays including an interception over the middle, albeit the LB made a heckuva 1-handed grab to get it. Fairless had a good mix of run and pass in their first 10 plays and gained 49 yards. Fairless also went 100% out of the shotgun in their first series. In the 2nd set of plays, Dalton moved the ball much better once they went under center. You could tell they were more comfortable there. The plays developed much faster when under center (seeing Dalton in the shotgun with plays that were clunky and slow-developing was a shocker to me). In those 10 plays the Bulldogs moved the ball 48 yards. Fairless was stalling a bit then hit a big 40-yard pass down the sideline and scored on a 10yd pass a few plays later (the only score of the day).

All in all, I'm not really sure who "won". Both teams had times where their offenses stalled, and both showed bright spots and a few big plays, as well. Fairless hit the 1 big play which put them in the red zone while Dalton was more methodical moving the ball (once they went under center). Just a first scrimmage, so can't really take too much out of it. Fairless was definitely the team with more energy. Good luck to both squads this year! We scrimmage Dalton this Friday.

WriterBuckeye, good post, thanks for the info. Not overly familiar with Bucyrus, know they always seem to win a bunch of games. I think this is a HUGE upgrade in Hillsdale's schedule. Good luck to Bucryus in their matchups as well. Looking forward to a good game and plenty of second level points to come to the winner.

Sorry Beast it took me a while to get it to work!

Triway looked probably the most prepared tonight, NW a close second....Wooster was sporadic besides a couple of dip balls to a speedy receiver. Triway had a big rb that had some good legs. Defense was fast but over committed on the outside blitz most of the time letting the runner was underneath a lot. Had a good speedy weak side lb/de. Wooster was up and down tonight it seemed. Had a super fast receiver that had some good catches in the flat that he turned to TDs. Run defense seemed good but pass defense could have been better. Their lbcorp was a like weak in coverage and corners looked small and not very quick.

As for NW, it was alright. Looks like the soph QB might have got a broken collarbone. He is being checked out. Have a huge part time rb/lb that looked quick. Main rb looked fast but indecisive. Besides one blast up the middle for a td, he just did not get a lot of yards. Run defense / short pass defense looked good but deep ball was tough on the D. Passing looked as good as could be in the senior and the soph was very accurate but pocket passer only. Receiving core is ok but not stellar. Good routes most of the time besides some timed route mis ques.

Was fun to watch the different styles tonight and look forward to the next. Anyone else there to provide info?

As the most knowledgable perosn about all three teams tonight, I will post by team by team analysis:

Northwestern: Showed glimpses of brilliance followed by periods which left fans wondering if these kids had ever seen a football before. I like the quick reads out of the backfield, I thought the starting qb threw a pretty nice ball (hope he is OK), I think the key to them winning is establishing a ground game and throwing in certain down and distance situations. Northwestern probably had the weakest line there tonight, not just in strength but also in blocking ability. On defense I like the unstettled look they throw at the line of scrimmage. It seems that they overplay the run, and get somewhat caught off guard by a pass going somewhere other than the flats. I believe if they correct some issues they will be a top four team in the WCAL.

Wooster: First of all, how in the H E double hockey sticks do you show up late to a scrimmage late when the scrimmage is held 15 minutes from your school? Again, shows lack of leadership, and I am glad that this year is Big Mike's Swan Song. The talent they have just seems to be squandered year after year. Size and speed wise, they were the king of the hill there tonight. The O line was slow and let people in the backfield on almost every play. I like Devin as the qb, but he needs time. On their first TD pass the reciever made one heck of a catch on a poorly thrown ball and was off to the races. The ball was overthrown because the qb had no time. I like the quick hit plays to the outside. I think he key to success for them is to hit an edge quickly and let the speed work in their favor. On D I like the bull rush, but for the most part, both NWN and Triway handled it well. Gotta mix something up on the blitz packages. I think they cover well down field, but have to stay in coverage. A few times with no rush recievers ran until they were uncovered and made some plays.


Triway: I thought they were off to a slow start, but once they got on track they pretty much met my expectations. Having serious inside information, I know they tried not to show much tonight and work on stuff they felt they needed to. I do think any scouts there tonight can figure out hoe to beat the Titans. I have a self imposed gag order on speaking about the Purple team in public forums.


All in all, I think anyone there could tell it was all three teams first scrimmage (except Northwestern). Each team needed to shake some dust off and I think this annual scrimmage provides a great opportunity for that. Good luck to all teams this upcoming season.

Huskie soph. QB/S does indeed have a broken clavicle and looks to be out for the season. Miyagi knows how disappointed this kid is because of how much he loves the game. Miyagi was looking forward to watching him play this year. Hope he keeps his spirits up and hangs in there and comes back fit and healthy for next year.

Wow. Sucks for the sophomore qb hope he heals quick and continues to grow as a player and a person. I wish him the best.

I don't remember a play where he took a shot.
