$1-2 million would let you live comfortably for life but it would take around $5-10 million to live in a bit of luxury without getting extravagant.

I would say 10-12 million. Pay off my student loans, buy/build a nice house on some land, a couple new vehicles for my girlfriend and I (were practically married lol), give some to immediate family, and invest the rest. If I were single, I could easily make it on something like 2 million, but if I had my CHOICE of how much, I'd ask for about 10-12 to do all those things (mostly for my family).

We need about $850K in saving to maintain our currently style of living after adjusting for certain reductions in spending (commuting expenses, no more mortgage, etc. If Social Security is still around 15 years, it will be somewhat less. I'll make that call in about ten years. Frankly, uspect that anyone born after 1960 better count on not being able to draw SS and Medicare until age 68 to 70- it's the only way either system will be able to survive.

We should be able get to that level in about five more years. and will be happy to build up over that level - we started the 401K and the IRA early. I'm fortunate in having a wife who understands the need and spends accordingly - this is a woman who is perfectly happy to drive a five-year-old Chevy Cavalier if it means more money in the savings account.

To never have to work again? After taxes, 2-4 mil would be plenty. I'm not a retard with money, I could invest half, live off the interest, and go "wild" with the other half no problem.

Just to be "comfortable" for the rest of my life? $250k after taxes. That would put me not only 100% out of debt, but be able to invest some of it and then...my normal pay would look astronomical without all those payments.

If the 1-2 mil is after taxes, then I agree with you 100%.

Heck, even if its before taxes so I'd have to work a few more years and not quit now ;).
