Does anyone think Smith could find a way into the lineup next season? I know it will be difficult behind Herron, Saine, Hall, and Berry but this kid is 6'3 220 and looks to be a different runner compared to the rest of the RB's.

Also, CB Joyner is down to OSU, FSU, and UF. Florida already has a ton of DB commits.

Let's talk OSU recruiting here.

I think as much as I hate to say it because this guy looks like he could be a beast that he will redshirt because there is way to many guys ahead of him to get him carries next year. Id rather him do that then get 2 carries a game and blow a whole year of eligibility.

I see Hyde and Smith redshirting next year. I hope they dont take Howard and dont see a need to use a scholarship in next years(2011) class either. A lot of good runningbacks in the 2012 class to go after.

Outsider here but I love to follow recruiting for both ohio state and michigan.

Roderick Smith is a great physical specimen but i'm concerned about his speed and wonder if he's destined to be a fullback in the long run. Even with his size and strength a 4.8 fourty time is slow

Rivals has his 40 time as 4.5 seconds which is the same as Beanie coming out of high school.

Watching tape of Smith, he does not run a 4.8 and his profiles say otherwise. He is basically a clone of Wells imo.

Herron and Saine will take the majority of carries.

Then Berry and Hall are next. Martin might as well transfer because he won't take PT away from Boren at FB and cannot take PT from the RB's. Hyde and Smith should redshirt unless one of them is just that good.

Has it been determined if Hyde is actually coming in or not?

Nothing official but the last I heard was that he is coming. I really don't see a need for him imo.

How can you not??

After watching our running backs get tackled by a gust of wind all year, I'll take a 230+ pound guy that knows how to go north and south, and doesn't get taken down by the first tackler all the time. I think Smith brings this to the table as well.

Uhh, Saine who is around 220 runs extremely hard now that he is finally healthy and I am perfectly fine with the 200+ yards 5 straight game performances by Herron and Saine along with Pryor.

Hyde should be at OSU already but now he may likely get passed by Smith who will do the same things for OSU.

OSU has Saine for 1 more year, Herron for 2 more, then you include Hall, Berry, and Smith.

If OSU continues to develop the read option run, RB's like those above will be better in that offense than Hyde.

Last I read, Hyde should be enrolling winter quarter. I think you'll see Smith play some next year. Herron & Saine have shown to be susceptible to injury. Hall & Berry I don't think can carry the load for a whole game.

Saine runs w/ some power, but he certainly doesn't run hard. He hits the hole very slowly, covers up, and gains yards with his leg strength. IMO, he's the least explosive of our 3 backs that saw significant time this year.

Sorry, when I think tough runners at OSU, I think Beanie Wells, Maurice Clarett, Eddie George etc. Brandon Saine is NOT a power runner. He might run "hard", but he doesn't break tackles the way most 220 pound backs should.

Saine has really impressed me this year after his injury plagued seasons. My opinion is that he is running harder than anytime I have watched him play. Everyone knows he isn't Wells, Clarett, or George good those guys were all top NCAA RB's which OSU does not have this season.

Don't forget Roderick Smith plays football in Indiana, unlike Beanie who played in Ohio.

That's his time when he was in the 10th grade.

I'll give you that Hall has looked very explosive.
I'm not sure how you can find Boom more explosive than Saine. I don't think it's even close actually.

Saine is a way better back than Boom, and I have no idea why Tressel is so obsessed with running Boom at all. I'd rather see Saine and Hall get a majority of the carries rather than cringe when Boom goes down at first contact.

Saine runs like he is afraid to get hit or fumble but he does keep his legs moving when in a pile. I dont remember him ever using a stiff arm like beanie and boom either.

Boom has at least shown the ability to break a long run, which we've never seen from Saine. Saine has absolutely zero ability to make anyone miss, so unless he has a wide open lane, he's not gonna break that long run, which negates his speed(that truthfully I still haven't seen). To me, and it's just my opinion, Saine is no more than a 3rd down back. Trust me, I'm not close to being thrilled w/ Boom either. I think Hall and Berry are more talented than Boom and Saine.

Hyde will be at OSU. Either Hyde or Smith will be redshirted. We are fine at RB.

Now I really have no idea what your talking about when compare Boom and Saine.

Longest run by Game:
Boom Saine
Navy 18 14
USC 8 2(only two carries)
Toledo 10 31
Illinois 14 19
Indiana (Didn't play) 30
Wisconsin 4(only two carries) 31
Purdue (Didn't play) 20
Minnesota (Didn't play) 15
New Mexico 53 4
Penn State 16 15
Iowa 11 49
Michigan 23 29

Now if you throw in receiving stats, the discrepancy becomes much larger in favor of Saine.

Anyways, other than Boom's 53 yard run against New Mexico, his longest run was 23 yards. Other than Saine's 49 yards run, he at least 3 carries over 30 yards. Also Saine had about 140 more yards on 8 less carries than boom. Besides there is a reason Saine is 2nd team all Big Ten.
