^ Good for them... I don't think ND would have ended up with him anyway... I don't think he is flashy enough or trendy enough pick up for them. JMO.

Not saying this guy is going to bolt any time soon, but these contract extensions don't mean a thing. Right now is good timing for him to get more money because he has TCU on the cusp and other schools are definitely going to be interested. It may NOT be a good time to go because if TCU can get to the title game it would be a big step toward the Mountain West eventually being recognized as a BCS conference or at the very least, give that conference's future champs a legitimacy they've never had before. The guy may be less inclined to leave if he has a real shot at national titles where he is. Still, continued success at TCU means it is more likely that the right offer will come along way before that contract is up.

Yeah he flashed around all those rings he had and was touted as the offensive genius behind NE's success. He was a very trendy pick at the time.

If only there was a ring for crappiest season with the best recruiting classes, he'd have a couple more to show off.

I say good for Patterson and TCU. As someone mentioned above, it's not like these contracts are written in blood and that things can't change (Weis's contract for example), but I like the fact that both coach and school are showing some loyalty towards one another. Everything I've read about Patterson is that he is a really good guy, and really likes TCU and the program that he's worked so hard to get where they are today. I really think he is one of the best defensive coaches in college football, and if he can keep producing on the offensive side of the ball, he may be able to start stealing some major recruits from the area, much like Boise does out west with California/Oregon/Washington area. If I was a prospect coming out of high school and I thought that I'd like to try and improve myself to the point I might get to the NFL some day, I would want to go where A) I know what I'm getting in a coach, and I'm as certain as you can be in today's age that same coach will be there as long as I am, and B) that I go to a program that has a great academic reputation as well as a solid football reputation, as the NFL looks more and more a "character" in who they draft, trying to weed out the Pac-man's of the world. Patterson runs a tight ship, you don't ever see TCU's football players in the news for lots of trouble, and they have established themselves in the last 10-15 years as a school that can send quality players to the NFL, especially on the defensive side of the ball. As many have said, I just think this is a smart move on the University's part, and a good move for Patterson, both in terms of a guaranteed job (as long as he keeps winning like he has since he's been there) and in terms of recruiting. Making headlines now for positive things is a very smart thing for TCU, since national signing day is getting closer and closer.

Meyer was a very realistic candidate for ND five years ago. He did hold talks with Kevin White, the former dumb ass AD.
