Four day work week

This article was written in 2008 when gas was at $3.98.

With the present situation gas will hit $4.00 and or $100 per barrel by summer and by 2012 $5.00 per gallon.

Would you be willing to work a 10 hour day 4 days a week?
Note: 4 day work week = 20% saving on your week gas cost

No doubt. But we'll never be given that option. They prefer you work 6 days a week and 10-24 hours a day. Salary is a bitch...

I wish they'd let us work 4-10s. Instead, it's more like 5-10s and a 6.

Without question this is the best schedule for efficiency. Having worked road construction in both 5X8 and 4X10 schedules, the latter is superior both in terms of worker satisfaction and job product. 5X8's were a joke, it took us an hour and a half to get the project and arrange equipment in place, work for a couple of hours and have lunch, work another couple of hours then spend 2+ hours clearing up and going back to the garage. Out of an 8 hour work day we did maybe 4-5 hours of work at best. With a 10 hour schedule, you can actually accomplish something and enjoy 3-day weekends every week.

i work for a road construction company during the summers and completely agree. a bunch of wasted time.

My experiences working for ODOT (best summer job ever) was that the 4x8's weren't really as good. We were getting in at 6 am and it was dark for the first hour of work. So they were basically paying us to sit around and do nothing for 4 hours during the week. I mean yes logical people could claim we could have driven to sites during that hour, but this is ODOT we are talking about here. But you are right though the 5x8's are bad when its an hour to and from the job sites.

This is my EXACT experience at ODOT. 6 a.m. at the garage, dick around for an hour and drink coffee. Get to the site and maybe start around 8:00. Afternoon session was a joke because we had to be back at the garage by 2:00 p.m. It was one of the best jobs ever even if the compensation wasn't that great. Outdoors, meet interesting people and nothing like finding a JUGS magazine from 1985 underneath the seat of the F-350.

Yep. And the job that you get assigned can be done by probably 9:00-9:30 if you actually worked on it like you should. You were still yelled at though if you were in the garage dicking around of course. And did your county have people that would call in and complain if you were sitting on the side of the road doing nothing? Give you an hour of work and expect it to occupy 10 hours. No one realizes why I say we could cut that department by 75% and be okay.

I would be very hard pressed to have to go back to 5 days after working 4 days for this long! 10 hour days can be long but having that 3rd day off totally evens that out IMO! I also ref HS wrestling too so it allows me the time I need for that since I work my real job Mon - Thurs, ref Fri/Sat during season and still have Sunday off during the wrestling season. Outside the season I have Fri, Sat, Sun off so that allows me to pick up overtime on the weekends when I want too which is nice! I also save on using vacation time as I take my time off around my already 3 days off so I don't have to use much vacation time.

That is true..Thursday tends to drag on pretty hardcore. But it is well worth it on Friday.

I try to work from home at least one day each week - saves a 45 mile round trip each time I do. Can't do it so much during the busy time of year (October-March,) but during the spring a summer I can often get away with two trips into the office each week.

Already do 4x10's. Problem is they arent set days and my days off are spread out. Sometimes I will work 8 days in a row, sometimes i will have 5-6 days off in a row. If you have a schedule like this, it wont matter if you are doing 4 days a week or 5.

My job would never allow 4 10's except MAYBE in June - August, and that is only if you are not on any clients with 3/31 or 6/30 year ends. At this lovely time in the year we are expected to work 5 10's and then 5 or so on Saturday. Wooo!
