Browns Hope Little is Big
By Fred Greetham
OBR Browns Reporter

Cleveland addresses wide receiver need with the 6-2, 231 Little.
BEREA—Mike Holmgren talked about drafting a homerun hitter at the NFL Combine and the Browns hope they found one in Greg Little.
The Browns obtained the pick in the trade with the Falcons (59th overall). The extra second-round pick was the key in the trade that moved the Browns from sixth overall to the 27th spot in the first round. The Falcons traded the Browns their first-, second- and fourth-round picks this year in order to draft Julio Jones. In addition, the Browns will get the Falcons’ first- and fourth-round picks next year.
Pat Shurmur is excited to add Little to the receiving corps.
“You are looking for a guy that can beat bump and run and can get down the field and can catch the football,” he said. “You’re always looking for guys who are big, strong and fast, who can catch the ball and run with it.”
Little (6-2, 231) sat out the 2010 season along with Robert Quinn at North Carolina for NCAA rules infractions, but still was named a Biletnikoff Award candidate, an award given to the nation’s premier collegiate receiver.
Despite missing his senior season, Tom Heckert said it wasn’t hard to evaluate Little.
“It’s not hard to evaluate him,” Heckert said. “It’s just older tape.”
Shurmur was asked if Little could be the Browns’ No. 1 receiver, eventually.
“We feel like he has a chance to be a (No. 1),” Shurmur said.
Little says you have to earn that status, but hopes to achieve that level.
“Quite frankly, I think that’s something that’s earned, especially in this league,” he said. “It’s a challenge that I’m willing to accept.
“I think the sky is the limit for me since I’ve only played the position for one complete year.”
Despite missing the 2010 season, Little said he stayed sharp by catching 100 passes a day. He said he is excited to continue to play in the West Coast offense.
“I prided myself on trying to catch 100 balls a day,” he said. “I come from the West Coast offense and it’s the same terminology and calls.”
Heckert likes Little’s ability to get up and get the ball in a crowd.
“I think he can get down the field and one of the best things he can do is go up and get the ball,” Heckert said. “I think he can make big plays for us.”
Little amassed 2,282 all-purpose yards at North Carolina. He caught 86 passes for 969 yards in his three seasons for the Tar Heels with six touchdowns. He also rushed for 805 yards on 166 carries (4.85 avg.) with six touchdowns. He started as a running back when Hakeem Nicks was still playing for North Carolina to get Little on the field as a freshman.
Little feels his time as a running back has helped him after the catch.
“I think I developed my physical, downhill style from being a running back earlier in my career.”
Little isn’t characterized as a speed guy, running in the 4.5 range in the 40-yard dash, but he says there are other things that help him.
“I think a lot of things come into play as a receiver,” he said. “I feel like route running and the ability to separate is an area that I flourish.”
“He’s got a lot of the attributes we look for in a receiver,” Shurmur said. “He finds a way to separate and he finds a way to get into the end zone.”
Ironically, Little played for former Browns coach Butch Davis.
“(Davis) said it was a remarkable organization to be a part of.”
The Browns were not concerned with his character issues.
“We spent a lot of time with him here and at his personal workout,” Shurmur said. “We feel we’ve done our due diligence on these guys and feel good about it.”
Little said he learned from the missed season and is hungry to play football again.
“I think I’ve grown from sitting out,” Little said. “I’m so hungry to get back out there and play.”
Little said he can’t wait to hook up with Colt McCoy.
“I sent a text out to Colt and am waiting to talk to him.”

Browns Add Sheard to DL
By Fred Greetham
OBR Browns Reporter
Posted Apr 29, 2011
That makes two defensive linemen with the first two picks of '11 draft.
BEREA — Can it happen again?
The Browns used their first two picks in the 2010 NFL Draft to address the secondary by taking cornerback Joe Haden and safety T.J. Ward. Both became starters.
They hope the same holds true with the defensive line.
The Browns took defensive tackle Phil Taylor with their first round pick and defensive end Jabaal Sheard from Pitt with their first pick in the second-round.
The Browns are hoping Sheard will be the answer as a pass rusher.
“I want to make the hit and be the guy to hit someone and make the crowd go ‘Oooh’.”
Sheard is described as a speed rusher.
“I think speed sets it up and it makes the (blocker) nervous,” he said. “I think I have both elements of the game with speed and strength.”
Sheard (6-3, 254) was an All-American and unanimous All-Big East Conference first team selection. He was the league’s Defensive Player of the Year. He ranked third in the Big East with nine sacks and tied for second with 14.5 stops for loss. He caused four fumbles and had 52 tackles. In his career, Sheard had 19.5 sacks and a total of 37.5 stops for losses. He also had 39 quarterback pressures.
In his career, Sheard had 142 tackles in 47 games to go along with the sacks and tackles for loss.
Sheard said he was a bit surprised the Browns selected him. He said he didn’t come to Cleveland for a visit.
“I had no idea as I haven’t talked to the Browns since the combine,” Sheard said. “I didn’t take a visit.”
Coming to the Browns, Sheard is looking forward to playing the Browns rivals.
“I’ve been around the Steelers playing at Pitt,” Sheard said. “I look forward to playing them.”
Sheard mentioned James Harrison as a player he patterns his play after.
“I’m aggressive on the field.”
Sheard was suspended from the Panthers football team with an aggravated assault charge in July 2010
“I made a mistake and learned a lot from that situation,” he said. “It helped me to learn and help me to get ready for the NFL.”
Sheard admitted he was worried that the incident might have cost him an NFL career.
“I was definitely nervous and felt I let my teammates down,” he said. “That was the first trouble I had been. That’s not the guy I am, off the field, I’m a cool-laid back dude.”
Sheard said his side of the story was different than what was in the paper.
“I ran into a teammates in a scuffle and I defended myself when he hit me,” he said. “We tussled and we both went through the window. The paper made it sound like I threw the guy threw the window.”
After he was re-instated, Sheard was voted as one of the team captains.
Sheard was awarded a bravery medal for helping an elderly lady escape from her burning home in Florida when he was 11 years old.
Hall of Fame wide receiver Paul Warfield announced the Browns’ pick.

Let's not forget we actually have a good WR coach now....before we had some idiot who came to us from the Minnesotta Gophers. What WR has come from Minnesotta? hahagrodt;754998 wrote:Yup he's got the potential to be a great steal and a very nice target for Colt
I think with our new WR coach who HAS coached pro bowl receivers will get all of these young receivers to produce in the WCO.

So who all is left on the board that the Browns have interest in for tomorrow? I kind of stopped watching the draft probably a half hour the Greg Little pick. I like the 3 picks so far. Got Taylor and Sheard to fill in the DT and DE position right away, now could possibly look for some more secondary help, an OT, probably another Dline man and I guess a QB.

Love the fact that the Browns pick was in within literally a minute of both times they were up. They knew what they wanted to do and went out and did it. As soon as Young was gone I was telling everyone I was with I wanted Little. I think he's going to be a good one. Maybe not a #1, but definitely a solid receiver. Would have liked him or Hankerson. Very glad we didn't end up with Cobb or Smith.
"I know how much Cleveland fans hate Pittsburgh," Taylor said, when asked about Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. "When I am going to play against him, he is going to go down."
Love that quote too. Like I said in another thread, I'm definitely on the Phil Taylor bandwagon already. Don't think it was the best pick for the Browns, but I love the guy.

WINNERS
Ryan Mallett: Unbelievably, while in the middle of living out a Tom Petty song, Mallett caught a miracle branch extended by Bill Belichick and the Patriots, and now finds himself in the only situation in the NFL that could really get people excited about his potential.
Washington Redskins: Dan Snyder must have been hogtied before this draft started, because the ‘Skins actually traded down during the second day of the draft. Four fifth- AND seventh-rounders won’t win you a Super Bowl tomorrow but it’ll help strengthen a roster.
Denver Broncos: The Broncos took advantage of San Francisco’s desperate hankering to nab Colin Kaepernick, moved back and picked up a bunch of draft picks. Then they got a guy who will be one of the biggest steals of the draft in Nate Irving, added Rahim Moore at safety and picked up Orlando Franklin to help the line.
Buffalo Bills: They drafted defense in the first round. And then they drafted defense in the second round. And then they drafted defense in the third round. There’s really no reason to stop until the seventh ends.
Cincinnati Bengals: They called Carson Palmer’s bluff for the second-straight day, and they did so in a way that could be teachable for some other first-round reachers, like the Titans and the Vikings: let the arguably-indistinguishable quarterbacks like Andy Dalton, Christian Ponder and Jake Locker fall.
Cleveland Browns: They’re stacked with picks for the next two years and they’re making great selections all over the place. Greg Little gives Colt McCoy a weapon and Jabaal Sheard can slot into their new 4-3 as an end.
Houston Texans: They jump back on the good side during the second day after grabbing a linebacker who can help out in the 3-4 shift in Brooks Reed and then trading back up to into the second to grab the talented Brandon Harris from Miami.
Randall Cobb: Cobb had to hang around for the entire second round in New York City, but it was worth it, since he went to the Packers (he actually said he would have waited ‘til the seventh to end up there). Just a case of Ted Thompson looking far enough ahead. Again.
New England Patriots: I don’t know why Colin Cowherd is stealing my line about the Patriots owning every single first-rounder in the 2030, but it might not matter if it actually happens -- Pats already have two first- and second-rounders in next year’s draft.
Sam Bradford: The Rams went defense in the first round when Julio Jones and A.J. Green didn’t fall, but went out and got their franchise QB some nice weapons with great hands in TE Lance Kendricks and WR Austin Pettis.

Walter football has the Browns taking the following FWIW.
102. James Brewer OT Indiana
124. Quan Strudivant LB North Carolina
137. Jaquizz Rodges RB Oregon State
I don't mind taking an OL we can make sure he is going to fit at RT and we think he can start. Other wise I would like to take a CB like House, Chekwa or Burton in the top of the 3rd round.
There are a lot of good linebackers left in the last rounds Strudivant, Greg Jones, Homan, Casey Mathews, Beal would all be good LB picks I think.
The Rodgers pick at RB is interesting. Him or Noel Devine would be intriguing late round picks, but I would rather get a Meahl or Sanzenbacher or more Defensive help late than a RB or QB.

I have no issue with those picks but I'm a little leery of 4th round offensive linemen from Indiana. Isaac Sowells? Still think there will be a QB in there as we have 5 more picks.OneBuckeye;755097 wrote:Walter football has the Browns taking the following FWIW.

We definitely need an O line piece, although Heckert has said they are all in with Pashos. I have also heard other people talking about Jaquizz, and after reading up on him I wouldn't be mad at all if we got him in the 5th.

I'd like to see them somehow slide Matthews in there, if he's on their board, and wouldn't mind them taking a flier on Cecil Shorts. If not Shorts I'd kind of like to see a "burner" type WR.

Round Two Wrap Up
By Fred Greetham
OBR Browns Reporter
Posted Apr 29, 2011
Browns take a pass rusher and wide out in round two.
BEREA — Tom Heckert and Pat Shurmur said they are pleased with what the Browns have been able to acquire through two rounds.
Much like the additions of Joe Haden and T.J. Ward last year, Heckert thinks the additions of Phil Taylor and Jabaal Sheard have brought needed toughness to the defense.
“I think there’s no question about that,” Heckert said. “I think we’ve definitely added toughness to our defense.”
Heckert said that Sheard was the top rated defensive end the Browns had on their board heading into the second-round.
“This kid plays hard, hard, but he can play the run and rush the passer,” Heckert said. “He makes a ton of plays and that just jumps out at you.
“He’s a good football player,” Heckert said. “He was a guy we targeted a long time ago. He was a borderline first round guy, but he can get to the passer.”
Shurmur agreed.
“He wasn’t defensive player of the year for no reason,” Shurmur said. “He’s got some good skills and can help us.
“He can do a lot of things,” he said. “He can overpower you. We think he plays well against the run.”
Heckert said the character issues surrounding Sheard and UNC wide receiver Greg Little did not discourage the Browns from taking them.
“I’ve said it 100 times,” Heckert said. “You have to weigh each case on its own merits. We passed on players because we didn’t feel comfortable. We feel comfortable with these two players.”
Notebook
Back to Lockout Status: With the Circuit Court granting a stay to the NFL Owners appeal, the lockout is back on. However, Pat Shurmur said the Browns were able to take advantage of the time they were able to communicate with the players on Friday.
“I think we took advantage of it because we were able to talk and communicate with our players,” Shurmur said. “From that standpoint, it was positive, but now we’re back in the lockout.”

Very happy with this draft so far. All 3 of these guys could step right in to starting roles.

I really like Herzlich as a late round steal. Would like Skrine if we decide to go CB. So many needs, and so many good players still out there.

I would love for the browns to pick up Cecil shorts (although I may be a little biased) or even Dane sazenbacher with our 2nd 4th pick or our 5th rounder

I don't think the Browns need or can afford another WR pick with all the needs they still have. I'd say CB, LB and offensive line should take priority with the remaining picks (not necessarily in that order).
