Browns/Opponent TOPlike_that;956931 wrote:you also have to consider the fact the offense doesn't even keep the Browns D off the field. It is pretty impressive that theya re able to be a top 5 defense with all the time they have spent on the field. If the offense actually learns how to play football and take some of the time of possession, then the Browns D might currently be a top 3 defense.
Bengals: 29.5/30.5
Colts: 34.5/25.5
Dolphins: 22/38
Titans: 37/23
Raiders: 25/35
Seahawks: 43/17
49ers: 27/33
Browns have had a larger TOP in 3 games, and the Bengals game was basically even. Average TOP = 31:13.

If the Browns could've snagged a few solid, inexpensive O-Linemen to play guard & RT this offense would probably look a whole lot better. Hell, it didn't even have to be a Clabo type. If they would've found a serviceable Porkchop Womack type of guy they could've at least run the ball and kept Colt upright. Even fatass Max Starks was released by the Steelers, brought back out of desperation and I think even he is playing at a decent level.
The Billy Yates retirement along with Steinbach hurt this team. They draft a stud RT and if Steinbach comes back healthy (BIG IF) next year, watch out for this O-Line.

Only issue I have with this, is that we had a 3rd round OG, and a 5th round OG. Gotta see if these guys play or not. We bring in a vet you have to play him, then we'd be wondering if Lauvao could play or not, same with Pinkston.BR1986FB;957296 wrote:If the Browns could've snagged a few solid, inexpensive O-Linemen to play guard & RT this offense would probably look a whole lot better. BS. You can rotate the rookies in throughout the season and get them acclimated with playing in the NFL and with one another. It's never an all or nothing situation when you bring in some veterans, even if you have draft choices for those slots.Commander of Awesome;957342 wrote:Only issue I have with this, is that we had a 3rd round OG, and a 5th round OG. Coaches talk all the time with QBs about slowing integrating them into the NFL and the offenses they'll be playing; there's no reason the same thing can't be done at any position on the field. In fact, I'd bet most coaches would love the luxury of being able to do so.
The front office saying this (that you have to play the young people to see if they can play) is nothing more than an excuse, and a piss poor one at that.

I'm not spinning anything. Those are the numbers. There have been bad games, but also games where the Browns absolutely dominated TOP. I'm right with you that the offense isn't helping out any, but in my opinion the problem has been consistency and finding the end zone more than simply TOP and not being able to stay on the field. The one good thing about not being able to gain more than 7 yards on a play is that when we actually do put a drive together it eats 8-10 minutes off of the clock.like_that;957385 wrote:Spin it how you want, but those are big differences in TOP. Was Pinkston expected to move to guard when we drafted him? Honest question, I have no idea.Commander of Awesome;957342 wrote:Only issue I have with this, is that we had a 3rd round OG, and a 5th round OG. Gotta see if these guys play or not. 6-10.
Win 2/3 vs. Rams/Jags/Cardinals and then pull another one out somewhere.

What is such a bummer is that at the start of the season running back was one of the only positions on this team that could be considered a legitimate "strength", and now that Hardesty has proven to be not reliable and Hillis has been run out of town, it is now a major position of need.
Typical Browns though, I guess we were just so strong everywhere else Shurmur decided to marginalize Hillis in his offense so as to make sure he wouldn't be back.
Also, has anyone seen the PFT story about how the Browns are now known as the most predictable team in the league offensively.
The story goes that Michael Lombardi of NFL.com has a former head coach he calls each week and over the phone gives the Browns personnel group, the formation, where the ball is located on the field and what hash mark and describe the motion — if there is any — and ask him to tell me the exact play that will be run. "He is correct about 95 percent of the time. No lie." “The Browns are so integrated into the West Coast system that their predictability is becoming legendary around the league,” Lombardi writes. "If a coach on the phone knows what play is coming from the Browns, you can be sure opposing defensive coordinators know what’s coming too."
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/11/05/browns-offense-getting-reputation-for-predictability/Good thing Holmgren brought in Pat "my offense is always in the bottom 20% of the league when I'm in charge" Shurmur to take us from the caveman offense Mangini days all the way back to the prehistoric dinosaur period because he is proving to be a disaster as a head coach. He can't run the offense, and from what we have seen has absolutely no respect from or control over his locker-room. Just pathetic.
