Browns Grab Speedster in Skrine

By Fred Greetham
OBR Reporter
Posted Apr 30, 2011

The Browns' take one of the fastest players in the NFL Draft.

BEREA—The Browns added one of the fastest players in the draft in cornerback/ return man Buster Skrine. He ran a 4.22 time in the 40-yard dash to set a school record and a 4.37 at the NFL Combine. Skrine also bench pressed 360 pounds at college.

Skrine said he felt he could’ve had a better time at the combine.

“I ran 4.22 in most of my times, but ran a 4.37 at the combine,” he said. “I stumbled after about 10 yards.”

What would you have run if you hadn’t stumbled?

“In the 4.2’s.”

Skrine (5-9, 186) started 30 games in his four years at Chattanooga, 27 at right cornerback. He recorded 155 tackles, deflected 21 passes and had five interceptions.

He also returned 40 kickoffs for 891 yards.

Last season, he was named to the All-American Super Sleeper Team by The NFL Draft Report and was first team All-Southern Conference in both 2009 and 2010.

Skrine said coming out of high school the big colleges backed off him due to his size.

“The size doesn’t really get to me,” he said. “Coming out of high school at 5-7, 145 I didn’t get a lot of Division I offers.”

Skrine thinks his leaping ability, strength and toughness will help him make up for his lack of height.

“I’m a tough corner,” he said. “I play taller than my size. I’m coachable.”

“I am definitely going to be going up against taller receivers, but I can jump and will be able to handle it.”

Skrine measured 37 inches with his vertical jump at the combine, which he said was among the top 10. He said he’s been able to leap 41 inches.

“In training I had a 41, but I didn’t warm up (at the combine).”

Skrine is confident he can make the adjustment to the NFL.

“The speed and size will be an adjustment, but I don’t think that will be a problem. I am happy for where I was drafted and I want to get started.”

Skrine cited Assante Samuel, who is an undersized cornerback who has reached the Pro Bowl level.

“Assante Samuel is an undersized corner that I like to watch.”

The Browns can only hope Skrine can play like Samuel.

Today has had a lot of very interesting picks. If this front office hits this year as it did last, we'll have some really fun guys to watch -- assuming these idiots don't fuck it up and lose the season bickering over money.

Ive been away all day. Did we trade up, while giving up the 6th rounders, or are they going towards next year and we got picks for them?

Browns Grab Tackle Pinkston in Trade
Jason Pinkston

By Fred Greetham
OBR Reporter
Posted Apr 30, 2011

The Browns trade their sixth-round selections and land a tackle.

BEREA—The Browns might have drafted their next right tackle in Jason Pinkston…even though he was a die-hard Steelers fan, growing up in Pittsburgh.

“I grew up a Steelers fan and I love them, but now it’s a business and I am excited to be a Cleveland Brown,” Pinkston said.

So what will you do with all your Steelers gear?

“I’ll donate it to Goodwill.”

Tom Heckert traded up into the fifth-round (150th overall) to get the 6-4, 305 tackle from Pitt. The Browns gave up their two sixth-round picks in the deal (168 and 170th overall) to Minnesota.

Pinkston was an All-Big East player and was a three-year starter at left tackle. He is projected to be a right tackle in the NFL according to NFL Network’s Mike Mayock.

“It doesn’t matter (which side I play),” he said. “I’m not going to get caught up in that.”

If Pinkston can make the transition, he could push projected starter Tony Pashos for playing time at right tackle.

“I am going to come in and learn and if I can get in and play right away, I’m definitely up for it,” he said.

“I’m a hard worker. Football is my life and I’ll do whatever I can to play at the next level.”

Good lord there are some idiots over there. Hope they aren't near any ledges or they'll jump. You'd think this was Heckert's first draft ever.

Call me crazy but I think Heckert got 5 starters and a major special teams contributor (Skrine...return man) out of this draft. I see Taylor, Sheard & Little as immediate starters. If Vickers is gone, Marecic will replace him....and we ALL know that Pashos is a China Doll so Pinkston is liable to slide into the RT slot. Pretty good haul, so far, if you ask me.

Another solid draft by our front office!!

I am pleased with all the picks, and I think the TE will make an impact in our passing game.

Job well done, GO BROWNS!!

I like that we have, imo, 3 sure fire starters (Little, Taylor, Sears) and possibly 2 more, pending Pashos and Vickers, and even maybe Skrine in the return game if Cribbs cant go or we employ a different KO guy than punt guy.

I am, but living in Toledo, and getting the Browns and Cavs games every night, you kind of start to follow them as well.

When push comes to shove (ie, Colts-Browns or Cavs-Pacers), I always have and always will take the Indy teams.

...and I watched Maumee Valley versus Southview. Terrible tennis. I get to call the NLL Championships on Wednesday however, hopefully it produces a better championship match that Ive seen this year.

Not too excited about any of the picks today. Marecic could be solid, but the others are meh at best.

Browns did work in the 1st two rounds though, and set themselves up nicely for the draft next year. Overall, I'd give the draft a much better grade than last season. Probably a solid B+.
