#1 Why don't they have 15 yard penalties when the QB's get drilled helmet-to-helmet like the NFL?

#2 Why do the college players lose their helmets so easily/often?

Both seem like a safety issue. And the helmet to helmet question......all over the ifeld it doesn't get called in college.

I forget what game it was but in one of the bowl games the same player lost his helmet 4 times in the 2 qtrs I watched. Another game on NYE two players on the line battling each other...BOTH lost their helmets and then the defensive guy got drilled in the face by his own player.

1. They do have penalties for this. Ask Vernon Gholston what happened when he clocked Colt McCoy down @ Texas in '06.

2. Because they're not completely button and strapped up. This is technically, according to the rule book, supposed to be an equipment violation, which is a 15 yd penalty

I know they have the penalties....but the bigger/tougher and paid players get called for it on Sundays.....but it's OK to get completely clocked in college.

I haven't heard a college offical say the words "defenseless player" all year.

I bet that guy that got his face smashed in by his own teammate buckles his helmet from now on.....should use that in s video during freshman orientation for football players.

I will admit to not watching a lot of the bowl games.

In college you can helmet to helmet on a tackle but you can't put hour hands together, salute or hold the ball out while scoring a huge TD.....that is a 15 yard penalty.

^^^^

Did you watch the Alamo Bowl the other night?

The SS from Oklahoma State absolutely crushed a guy from Arizona on a swing pass and got screwed because the Zona guy ducked his head to avoid the hit and there just happened to be helmet contact. It ended up changing the drive and leading to pts for Zona

Or the KSU game where they called that hit at the end of the game. When he hit him in the back with his shoulder.

They do have a helmet-to-helmet personal foul penalty. They just don't always call it, like when it's SEC officials trying to stick it to a Big Ten team in the Rose Bowl.

If it kept happening to the same guy then it was clearly a personal issue. He was obviously wearing a helmet that was too big and/or he didn't have his chinstrap on correctly or tight enough.

I think it was Jay Richardson that put that hit on McCoy and it was an awful call.

first glad that college isnt as bad as the NFL yet ...... secondly the losing of helmets is showmanship by some college players .. sometimes they lose theyre helmets in a pile or something with loose chinstraps for showmanship ...its just a look at me thing " sometimes" not often but sometimes hgigh schoolers do it too ..On a very small scale but it happens.. it aint hard to lose your helmet in the right situation .. it can make you look tougher..

It is strange that you mostly see the helmets fly in college. You don't see it in high school at all (well, rarely, and it's usually legit). Even watching NFL you rarely see a helmet come off. But in college it seems like every game has a few or several.

When I played HS ball, there is no way my helmet was coming off, even unbuckled. Makes me wonder if they wear them too loose.

Just found video of it. I stand corrected. Good call.
