Everyone thought he would be a safety when he was signed a year ago. Sorta funny.

As for Ohio State, they have themselves a little bit of a situation with the OL. I remember when Weis came in and Willingham only had seven OL on scholarship. Not a good place to be.

But if it means my friend Ben St. John (#66) will see the field for the Buckeyes, then I'm all for it! :D

Haven't heard anything other than the coaches do like him, he just needs to get and stay healthy. Kelly is big on "work volume" and if McCarthy can't even get reps in practice because of injuries, he isn't going to see the field.

Stewart Mandel on how this recruiting class, particularly on the defensive side of the ball, could be what Notre Dame needs to put it back over the top

The one part that I found interesting was that Brian Kelley said at his past schools he was not only worried about winning but about creating fan interest and excitement. He said at Notre Dame the excitement is already there and he doesn't have to rely on a gimmicky offense to create it. Makes me think that perhaps part of the reason his defenses in the past were slightly below average in the past was because he spent so much time creating an offense that would draw attention. As they say, offense sells tickets, defense wins championships. We sold the tickets already let's go win a championship.

Now the real question is who will be the opening day starter at qb. It is between crist, Rees, Hendrix, and golson. Kelly has been high on Hendrix since he has committed. Rees would gave never seen the field if Kelly didnt have a plan for Hendrix. Now you throw in golson, who runs the spread to perfection. On the other hand, you have Rees who was starting to click at the end of the year but is he a qb that can win you games by himself? My money is on Hendrix starting with different packages for golson. Rees will be the number 2 and crist will transfer by fall.

I'm not real sure Crist is in Kelly's future plans, unless he absolutely wows in spring practice (will he be ready by then?). He had an opportunity and just never seemed to get it or click with the offense. I know Crist only had limited time, but Rees was able to pick everything up with shorter reps in practice and playing arguably much better defenses when he finally saw game action. There are just too many young guys with potential who are now ready to go, namely Hendrix. It might be time to move on. I tend to agree with Crimson streak and think Crist falls to #3 and ends up transferring.

I can't really see Crist transferring either. He will definitely be behind the 8 ball for spring practice unless he is completely healthy, the competition will ridiculous. I'd have to think that if Crist is healthy, he would be the starter with Golson playing quite a bit too like was already mentioned. I'm pretty sure he will graduate after next year, hopefully he puts together a good enough season where he can move on to the NFL and make room for Hendrix and Golson to take over in 2012. Kelly will continue to sign a QB in each class which should make the competition great moving forward for playing time which will only help everyone improve. As much as I hated the Poodle at USC, that is one thing that he really did well. He made each position battle ridiculously competitive and it paid off huge. As long as Kelly does it without the NCAA needing to get involved...

I honestly don't see crist starting next season especially if he can't go in spring ball. There is too much talent at qb that he will get passed

I don't see Crist starting next season unless he is miraculously healthy for spring. It's just not going to happen in my opinion.

I don't think Hendrix or Rees will be getting some packages designed for them purely based on their athleticism. They're either going to start or be benched completely in my opinion.

Everyone knows it's going to be interesting this spring, it's sorta weird how their skill sets vary.

Athleticism: 1) Golson............2) Hendrix, 3) Rees
Arm: 1a) Hendrix, 1b) Golson......2) Rees
Durability: 1's) Hendrix and Rees.............3) Golson (Golson came it at like ~170. Needs to be ~200 for fall)
Knowledge of the offense: 1)Rees....................2) Hendrix, 3) Golson

Knee Ligaments: Not Crist.

What we do know is that the competition at the QB position is only going to make them all step up their game. Crist has said he won't go down without a fight. I still hope he is able to be successful but its hard to argue with Rees' play to close the season. Everyone knows that BK has always been a big fan of Hendrix. Golson is the wild card to me. Is he that good that he can beat out the other 3 for the position. Or will he save a year of eligibility this year, which I doubt since he's on campus now. BK has said Golson is the only true spread QB on scholarship, but he will run whatever offense fits the guy that wins the job. Certainly going to be an exciting spring! Go Irish!

Hopefully Nate sees the writing on the wall that he won't factor into the QB situation. I'd rather have him stay at ND but forfeit his scholly, but even then Kelly said he wouldn't have reps for more than 4 QBs.

Is there any scenario where Golson would end up being the #2? The way I see it if he doesn't win the job outright then whoever wins the job between Rees and Hendrix will be 1, the loser 2 and Golson essentially redshirted, even if Golson looks like the second best QB in spring ball.

I don't see Golson redshirting. As its been said its basically Crist/Rees/Hendrix in one category and Golson plays a different brand of football. Crist will be the "starter" if healthy but I really think Golson will play early and often.

I agree. I think we will see several packages inserted into the offense that are Golson only packages. Get him ready to take the reigns in 2012.

The way I see it, Crist, Hendrix and Golson better play their collective asses off in the spring because Rees has "it". He's not flashy but he knows how to win and the confidence he gained at the end of last year will be a huge advantage.

Can I just say that I'm extremely excited that we are having this discussion.

I didn't think I'd see the day when Notre Dame had FOUR EXTREMELY CAPABLE QBs going into Spring Practice!

BARF. No one is born a winner. Saying someone has "it" is bullshit that people created to explain why someone who isn't a great quarterback wins games. The defense, gelling on the OL, smart play calling and, yes, Rees progressing won the latter part of the season. It definitely wasn't "it."

LOL, no one is a born winner........try telling guys like Joe Montana that. How is it bullshit? How many mistakes did the kid make? How quickly did he grasp the offense? How do you know he's not a winner? He didn't do it with style and grace but he did it being cool and calm and that's the "it" factor that Crist doesn't have. There's some intangibles you can't teach just like athletic ability. Don't get caught up with fantasy stats, be glad you have someone back there who can win for a change!

All I'm saying is that Rees has proved to BK that he can handle the job, no one besides Crist, who was inconsistent, can say that heading in to the srping.
