needs to be invented to help mankind? Here are a few of mine:

...wider cones to catch dripping ice cream.
...fishing reels that automatically reel in the fish. Just push a button.
...a cream you put on your face that disolves your beard without using a razor.

Just put less ice cream in the cones

It's called a net

I've been working on this one for years...A microwave size kitchen machine that you can put a piss-warm six-pack into and a minute later they're frosty and ready to enjoy. No Liquid nitrogen or other consumables, just a door to close and a timer to set. A reverse-microwave kind of appliance.
How to do?

A "green" gym. Power is generated at the gym from the machines being used. Also could use the same concept with a laptop. The power is generated by typing and moving the mouse around.

1995...your first answer would work. Your last two...wrong. Nets have nothing to do with a fishing reel and Nair is used for the legs, but wait maybe your face is attached to your legs. Are you in a circus?

The last one has already been invented.

I actually had something very small invented with the help of a partner of mine. It's a niche product, so the average consumer would have no use for it, but it's been okay making us a buck or two.

I agree with ccrunner...a car that runs on air/water. Plus this will put it to Qatar for winning the 2022 World Cup.

I also think it's time for there to be cell phone service nationwide with no dead spots. I think it's absurd there are places where there is zero cell phone service. It's stupid.

It'd be nice for rural places to get high speed internet.

I am also up for bringing better public transportation to the United States. Get on board with what Europe has in trains around all countries and international trips. It's so much nicer to not have to worry about driving as much in certain places, just hope on the train.

how about a cell phone service that doesn't rape customers, and charges a TON less than what's out there. I'm sorry, but there is no way that the operation costs to carry me and my wife are $100 in one month.

A zero calorie beer/alcohol that has zero calories, zero carbs, but doesn't affect the alcohol content. Those 55 calorie beers have half the alcohol that a normal beer does, so that defeats the purpose. I would like to see double the alcohol, while reducing the carbs/calories :)

It was a specific kind of field submitter software ... but with a twist that I'm not sharing with y'uns. ;)

No, it doesn't, but cell companies aren't in the business of breaking even. Neither is any "for profit" company.

Cell Service costs + Network Maintenance costs + Research & Development costs + Employee Salary costs + The Loss They Incur on Phone Prices (yes, they actually lose money on the phones themselves ... which they make up over the contract term ... hence why buying a phone with a renewed contract is cheaper) + The Profit margin, which is pretty small at this point

These are the bulk of how your bill is determined.

I understand the whole "for profit" thing. I teach economics :) I just think that it is a little excessive. With increasing technology, I'd like to think prices would drop, like other technological devices, etc.

The problem with that is simply geography. The US is a bigger country than European countries with alot more of empty spaces in between.

when i was in college i wrote an excel based software program that simulated air drilling in the appalachian basin. it was very precise with average rock hardnesses prgrammed into it for the known formations of the area. It was for a scholarship and once I won I sold it to a company who sells and uses it pretty regularly. I got $11,000 for it (6 for the scholarship, 5 for the software) wish i'd have kept a royalty on it.

that's the extent of my inveting prowess.

an idea i have but will never capitalize on:
3D TV that doesn't require glasses.

We rented a house over in the mountains outside of Ashville. No cell service and the landline was hosed. It was wonderful.

My dad had a very good idea with a handheld appliance that streamlined and greatly reduced the effort to put the yellow plastic capping on top of fences like at baseball diamonds. If you've ever seen someone try to put it on by hand, it's tedious and takes forever. With his device, he just slid it inside the plastic pipe, put it on top of the fence, and jogged around the outside of the fence putting on the plastic covering. He never really looked into getting it publicized or anything, though.

I'm currently working on an Excel sheet that our own IT department said couldn't be made. I seem to be the only one in the office that doesn't just take IT's word for it regarding Excel, though.

He should. It would be a niche market, but it's something!

This isn't anything new, but my wife says I should have gone into engineering:
Why is it that on my 1997 Pontiac the I have not touched the lights in 14 years. They come on when it's dark, go off when it's light. If it's dark, when I release the parking brake, they turn on and stay on til I stop or it gets light.

I have had 4 vehicles since then, a 98, 01, 05 and 09. You would think that once they perfected that way back in 97, it would be a standard feature on every vehicle, foreign or domestic. So of the 4 newer vehicles, how many have this feature???

NONE of them. The ball has been dropped by the automotive industry. That would be 2 Dodges, another Pontiac and a Toyota. So we know that is an option, it was available 14 years ago. I didn't even ask for it on the vehicle, it came with it or in a package. So why is that not a standard or required feature on every vehicle?????

Also, how about something that kills moles? While my trap has killed a few, maybe the saying should be "build a better moletrap".
