Mark Stoops is not a smart hire for YSU. And if he is smart, he'll wait for a I-A job this year or next. Both stand to lose if the AD is dumb enough to think a local boy is the best choice. And next year will be a bummer no matter who the coach is. Talent is down and recruiting has not been good. Stoops simply won't stop the Mooney/Ursuline guys from leaving for MAC or better offers. He'll end up with left-overs again that have made the program average & lacking the ability to make the playoffs. I hope they pass on this dude, for the sake of the program.
I respectfully disagree. All YSU needs is someone to light a fire under the program and get the city of Youngstown excited about Penguins football again. If that happens, the local kids will stay home (who wants to be a loser at Ball State anyways?) and support the program again. And the Stoops name is known throughout the country, between touting the storied history of YSU and the successful name of Stoops, recruits will come.
If he has a successful 2-3 years, the program will be back on track and he will probably be leaving for a job elsewhere, but YSU will have gained some national attention again, rather than being amazingly mediocre under Heacock's watch.
