^ I think those two bring "excitement" to the program and help in the short term recrutiing wise, because they are young hot names. They may not be the better coach, but that hire would make more sense to the fan base and recruits. Then the performance of Texas's defense this year and their record brings that wtf are they doing element to the hire. I think he will be a fine hire (Same things were being said when Gene Chizik was hired) but I think he will get off to a bumpy start.

Correct me if I am wrong, but Malzahn isn't exactly "young"
EDIT:
Malzahn is 45
Muschamp is 39
Mullen is 38
Malzahn wasn't as old as I thought he was

Any truth to the rumor that Mullen turned Florida down and is waiting for the Penn State job to open up?

There is no way someone turns down UF in hopes of another job.

Especially when it's gonna take JoPa croakin' for the job to open up, even though he hasn't coached for years.

Somebody turned them down...there is no F'n way a Def Coor was FL's first choice I don't care what their AD is trying to say. This was a "save face" hire if there ever was one. Somebody BIG... ie Stoops, Spurrier maybe even Saban was contacted and a deal couldn't be reached so they grabbed the first guy that would sign on the dotted line. Programs as rich in tradition and just plain rich don't hire Defensive Coordinators without dangling some bait to a Big Name first. I find it laughable how so many of the mastergators are trying to make this seem like Mus-chump is somebody they wanted all along. Until two days ago 99% of Gatorville had never heard of this guy...and neither had most of you on here who are trying to bust on me for calling a dog pick a dog pick.

Sadly, I think this is reality.

Who said they wanted Muschamp all along? As far as not hearing of him, you may not have, but his name isn't new to anyone who moderately follows college football. Sure it was an unexpected hire. We all did probably figure it'd be a bigger name in the sense that it'd be someone with at least some HC experience. But really, when you look at Jeremy Foley's history of coaching hires, he's never really gotten a big name, established coach for any programs. And for the most part, his choices have worked out (this obviously doesn't include Ron Zook).Tiernan;599294 wrote:Somebody turned them down...there is no F'n way a Def Coor was FL's first choice I don't care what their AD is trying to say. thank you for verifying exactly what I said...EVERYONE figured it would be a bigger name. The demands on HC's are so far beyond those of DCs & OCs its not even in the same stratosphere. FL will wish they had a Ron Zook type after this guy fumbles the program away. Couldn't happen to a better bunch of fans. Can't wait to say ITYS.

The fact that everyone thought it would be a bigger name doesn't make it a bad hire. Time will tell. Obviously Florida fans hope that Foley knows what the fuck he's doing - by now he probably has a good idea of what characteristics a successful head coach must have. Just because someone hasn't done something yet, doesn't mean he can't. How many HCs start out as HCs?
Anyway, I can't argue or agree with your opinion. I'll just let it play out and if you're right, great for you.

Malzahn balked at Vandy ? I hear he will get $1.3 million at Auburn. I read he is not HC material, he drinks 3 pots of coffee a day and is always a bundle of nerves.
Applewhite is debating between Florida and a Texas job since OC Greg Davis is gone. Smart is old friends with Muschamp. Its a lateral move, but he would enjoy working with a good friend more than Saban. He would be gone as a HC in 2 or 3 years max. Holgorsen has been targeted by Pitt. Akina might stay at Texas too, moving up to DC ?

Charlie Weis is rumored to be the OC in Gainesville next season. It could be announced as soon as Sunday.
