It was H.W. in the movie. He was VP at the time, campaigning for Clements.

The program was a mess and needed to be smacked down to reality.

I don't buy the "everyone else was doing it" excuse. Have some integrity. Also, I don't respect anyone who doesn't come clean about the past to be a part of the current team. Until a player like Dickerson comes clean, he should not be allowed near the team.

There is no honor in winning when the team is blatantly cheating.

Am I naive enough to think they were the only team? No, but it still does not begin to justify their actions.

^^I always liked him as a player. Some of the things that happened or were revealed through his son's little ordeal make this statement seem pretty accurate.

Eh, they are two completely different things. He isn't a hypocrite - in both cases he felt entitled. He's basically just a selfish assfuckface. But there are plenty of those at the highest level in sports.

I remember all of this going down, when Tm Brokaw was talking college football on the nightly news you knew there was some major shit going down. I was in college though, and we all just basically laughed about it, they had it coming was a recurring theme. I didn't realize at the time and never looked into as in depth as 30-30 did though. Holy shit did they have it coming.

I forgot how bad-ass Dickerson was at SMU. I remember him as a Ram, but he was pure punishment wearing #19 at SMU.

Death penalty will never be handed out again. It cause them to lose two seasons and broke up the SWC...they would never impose that penalty again under any circumstances. I have to agree that SMU certainly did deserve it though.

I've commented a few times when this topic has come up on here, people who didn't remember or didn't know all the details look at it as how the NCAA killed SMU and how far it set them back and how it was such a lesson for the NCAA....as though they were the bad guy. SMU screwed SMU, plain and simple.

Never say never. In this day and age, though, most schools should know better than to toe that line.

Hell when the subject of USC and the notion of "loss of institutional control" came up, and a lot of people were beginning to clamor for the death penalty to be levied against them...it was kinda hard to believe. SMU continued along with business as usual...USC though clearly violating rules, came no where close to thumbing their noses at the NCAA like SMU did, not even close.

They (the school in question) would have to be way out of line in order for it to reoccur. As they were saying towards the end of the film, no one expected it to take SMU TWO DECADES to return to some type of prominence as a result of the death penalty (in that case, winning the Hawaii bowl.)

Don't get me wrong, it's going to take A LOT for a school to be brought down in that manner again. But to say that it will never happen again? I wish I had that kind of faith in college football. But it's starting to get out of hand again, someone is going to be made an example of eventually.

Shit, it took my Irish 15 years and a bowl win in Hawaii to try and get our shit together. :)

I didn't know anything about SMU or whatever because I was 8 when that went down but that documentary was outstanding. I think I'll take them on NCAA now.

it was definitely H.W.

btw, did anyone else sense the irony that this was aired right after the Heisman Award Show? I know it may not have been planned, but with all the allegations and such with Cam and Cecil Newton, I found the timing to be more than coincidental.

I found it more ironic for Cam to say how much he appreciated everything his mom and dad did behind the scenes to help him reach his goals.

Some good quotes in the documentary.

"Don't tell me about the labor, just show me the baby"

Very well done documentary though. I also didn't know the extent they went to, to ignore the NCAA

LOVE that quote. So true. No one wants to hear about all the b.s.; they just want to see the results.

Yeah "The Best that Never Was" still takes the cake for me.

But like others have said, pretty much all of the episodes have been solid.
