All I was doing was crediting LSU and Alabama's defense and saying that it's absurd to think that Cam Newton hasn't been tested. I don't think the SEC is the best conference, but they do have arguably more talent than any other conference on the defensive side of the ball.

People must have some short term memories, what VY did that year was incredible. Newton is great, no doubt, but VY did it from start to finish and did it against better opponents. I'll take Ohio State and USC of 2005 over Alabama, Arkansas and LSU of 2010.

I don't think anyone is slighting Newton, he is a stud and like I said earlier he singlehandling will lead Auburn over Oregon. Just as VY did against SC. Heck, I still put Tommy Frazier up there as one of the greatest college QB's of all time even though his stats were nowhere near todays quarterbacks.

Yes, they were exposed. OSU had a great defense and only gave up 23 points (the UT offense didn't score the safety). USC gave up 40+ to the same stud QB. USC wasn't one of the all time great teams on defense, they were one of the all time great teams on offense, which Vince DIDN'T PLAY AGAINST.

Were OSU and USC better teams than LSU, Arkansas, and Alabama? Absolutely. Better defenses? Not really. OSU's defense that year is comparable to LSU's this year, and I'll take Alabama's defense over USC's, considering they gave up 28 to ASU that year and 42 to Fresno State.

Maybe you're the one with short term memories about how mediocre USC's defense was that year.

Vince Young hands down. I really don't think it's even that close. Yes what Cam Newton has done this season is pretty amazing but week in and week out Young did something new that had us all in awe. I'll never forget the play he did vs OK State when he did a pump fake then ran for another 60 some yards.

VY had the greatest ever back to back Rose Bowl games ever and one was the National Title Game.

And Newton is playing an out of this world defense with Oregon? LOL, if Newton leads his team to a national title, maybe he'll be just as good as VY, until then, he hasn't done much to convince many on here.

That USC defense was good enough to have continued a 34 game win streak, I'd say they were ok.

Nobody came close to VY's numbers that year. D-Rob is very close to Cam this year in stats. Auburn has had a great year with Cam as the play caller. Vince Young himself had a great year. Like someone else said, it depends on Cam's performance in the NC game.

The only thing that matters is the final 12 games of that winning streak, games in which their defense is mediocre.

This. It wasn't so much his numbers, although they were certainly worthy of talking about. It was his presence. Forget his NFL career, if we're talking about just what he did at Texas, the last half of his sophmore year and all of his junior year, what set VY apart was his PRESENCE. The guys just oozed leadership on that team, and people that watched him could just tell that when the chips were down, he was going to make the play that won you the game. He is what they call a "winner", plain and simple, in college. You take VY off of that team, and USC beats them by 21 points or more and that's assuming they even make it to the NC game (which they wouldn't have. Probably about 8-4 or 9-3). Was there ever any doubt that he was going to win the game on the final drive of the NC game? After watching him the previous year and a half in many games, I told the people I was with that USC was done, because there's no one in America who could stop him in that offense, that year. I and was proven right.

Before I even clicked on this thread, I knew Tebow would be brought up a couple times. And yep, I was right.

Young > Newton or Tebow

Tebow had an incredible career and his stat sheet is stuffed, but VY is one of the most electric and prolific players to play QB at the college level IMO. Cam Newton is a heck of a player too, but not even he matches VY's electricity.
