I can't recall there ever being a thread on this and I think that it will raise some interesting discussion. What are your views on disciplining children, especially your own? I think that the views will vary, especially from non-parents.

What do you do as far as disciplining your children? Do you believe in spanking? If so, for what reasons? If so, do you make sure that it is not out of anger or is it more-so reactionary? If you do not, for what reasons? Were you spanked as a child?

Do you feel that our society has gotten to the point where (because of divorce, perhaps) child discipline is a thing of the past, where we allow children to do whatever they want?

Spank their asses if they need it. Also, teenagers - a good backhand every now and then would teach them to give pause and remember that there are just some things that don't need to be said.

Yes I was spanked as a child and yes I got the ole backhand a time or two. And I deserved *really* each and every time.
And when I say a time or two, I mean that literally. Not that it hurt so much, I just didn't like it at all. Taught me another reason why an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of medicine is gospel.

Actually I say it the first time. If the kid refuses to listen, I'll say it again....a little more forcefully. At the third time I give them the "options." Usually the options means taking something from them that they enjoy.

If that doesn't work then a good old-fashion spanking usually does the job.

Yes...I think corporal punishment applied appropriately is an option but it should be used as a last resort.

usually a few bars of soap in a pillowcase works. If im feeling soft, i just bust em with the phone books a few (dozen) times. We also waterboard....

I'm not gonna lie, I slip often and spank too quickly. I find that it is when I sit my kids down, talk to them about why they are getting a spanking, then hug them until they stop crying and tell them that I love them... that is when I feel it is the most effective.

I was spanked as a child. I got the hand, belt, I even had to go out and get a switch for my grandma a few times. When I DO have kids, I plan to spank them. I really think that a big problem with society is that kids are spoiled by their parents and are treated as friends. There is a difference between spanking kids and hitting them. I'm 24, but I think we as a society need to go back about 15-20 years or so and discipline like our parents/grandparents did, or some of you did/do (depending on your age).

A lot of parents are just too 'lazy' too discipline their children these days. I agree, lack of discipline is a big part of society's problem today.

I was spanked as a child, deserved it every time, and plan to spank my children when I have them. Kids will push their limits as far as you let them and sometimes spanking is the best option.

Yes, especially in urban. low income areas. Kids have no one to answer there, not their parents, not the school (who don't even punish them) so the kids just run wild doing whatever they want.

From a very early age when they first test boundaries consequences follow. This makes disciplining and understanding expectations much easier later as they age into teenagers.

At a very young age they do know right from wrong. It's not difficult. What is difficult for children isn't knowing the difference but rather choosing and doing the right thing.

There are no warnings in our house. My children know that. If they "choose" to be disrespectful, disobey or "do" the wrong thing, there are consequences that do not always fit the infraction. Often times the consequences are worse.

We all understand each other, the expectations and the rules of the house. There are no surprises. The biggest point of emphasis is that it is the spirit of the rules and expectations that are to be followed as opposed to the exact rules and expectations themselves.

I am very fortunate to have apparently gotten lucky with this approach because it seems to be working well.

Yes, I agree, this is how I feel.

I too was spanked as a child. And needed it every time. My children get spanked. As someone said, spanking is good,,,,, I dont agree with beating. There is a differance.

I got spanked when I was young and I spank my kids now but only after I give them a warning like: you better stop or its butt spankings and that usaully is enough. I think that now days parents are too scared to discipline kids just for the main reason being that people dont know how to mind thier own business and will call the cops on someone who is trying to teache kids manners.
Its amazing the way people cant handle kids they try to treat them like equals rather than like being the boss. And people wonder why kids are so out of control, they are taught zero respect.

I was beaten with a rubber hose. Pity my third brother, who mouthed off once too often and had the hose stuck in his mouth while he was asleep while milk was poured in. That's why I have only two brothers now.

I plan on doing the same to my kids, if I ever have any. Of course, I think when you name your kids Eddie and Vinny, they grow up with a healthy respect....all of these Connors and Tanners and Hunters need the living shit beaten out of them on a daily basis.

C.A., that woman in the clip is terrible and should have her kids taken off of her. That is torture, not discipline such as spanking butts, hands etc.

Actually, the lower-income urban families seem to be the ones who still use corporal punishment rather often. They are often raised by mothers and/or grandmothers ... who typically don't hesitate to "wear them out."

The ones I see punished less often are the upper class suburban children. Johnny gets a timeout or gets grounded, which may or may not make a difference as he can just go to his room and play his PS3 on his 42" LED HDTV.

Difficult question. I am not opposed to spankings when they are needed but like anything else many use them ineffectively or improperly. Then there are the complete assholes that actually hurt their kids under the guise of "discipline" or teaching respect. Fear != respect. (And please don't take the hurt thing out of context, I mean like actual hurt, not "ow my ass stings for three minutes")

I'm not a parent so I try to avoid telling other people how they should parent. There are kids that benefit from being spanked and such and then there are those who respond better to other methods of discipline. The key is for each parent to find what is most effective for that particular child. Spanking your kid or not doesn't make you a good or bad parent in and of itself.

Some kids respond well to spanking. Others don't. All depends on the situation. I'm not opposed to people doing it in the right way and for the right reasons.

With that said, i also think it is completely acceptable to find other ways to discipline and the like. And those methods can be and are just as effective.

Maybe when the mothers are home? My brother works in a terrible school district in SC (North Charleston) and if every kid there that deserved to be suspended was, they would have 0 kids in the school. The kids are late, say F you to the teachers, play on their cell phones, tell the teacher they wish they could hit them, need bribed to do homework, etc. The passing rate of whatever test it is that they take was 54%, and I think the graduation rate is around the same level. The problem with these kids is parenting at home, and the administration not sticking to actual punishments. These kids are literally the future criminals of America.
