Is there any other program that practices at 6:00 A.M. in order to prepare for their Bowl game????

Navy is holding practice at 6:00 A.M. this week in order to accommodate all of the different exam times and various schedules of the Midshipmen football players. Normal wake-up call at the Academy is 6:45 but football players this week must get up at 5:00 in order to be on the practice field by 6:00.

In addition, this is a key recruiting week for D-1 programs. Air Force has had a 3 week jump on both Army and Navy due to the later schedule of the Navy vs. Army game. There are 11 different assistants not attending Bowl preparation practices this week because they are across the country seeking to make up lost time on the recruiting effort. There are but three Navy Coaches at practice this week putting a large demand on them also. Present is HC Niumatalolo, DC Buddy Green and OC Ivin Jasper.

After the Maryland game when Senior Wide Receiver Mike Schupp tore his ACL it was hoped that he would be back in time for a potential bowl game. He practiced for the first time after the Army game and it doesn't look like he's going to be able to suit up against the Aztecs.

Better news regarding Senior Captain Wyatt Mddleton. Apparently it was a shoulder* that kept him in a sling for the first two practices after the Army game and that he will be able to go in the Poinsettia Bowl. He is the leader of the defense and it will also keep his 47 consecutive game streak alive.

Got this message today. The reason it's good is because part of the compensation a school gets for bowl games is a certain amount of tickets for free. The more they sell the more money their bowl nets them.

The Naval Academy has sold its full allotment of bowl tickets for the eighth-consecutive year.

"Once again, Navy has proven why our program is one of the best in postseason ticket sales in the nation," said Naval Academy Director of Athletics Chet Gladchuk. "Thanks to everyone who continues to support Navy football and the Academy."

Navy has sold all 13,000 of its assigned Poinsettia Bowl tickets and with the military presence in San Diego it is expected that more than 20,000 Navy fans will be in the stands at Qualcomm Stadium on Dec. 23 when the Mids take on San Diego State. Included in those totals are approximately 1,100 Midshipmen who will be in attendance to support the team.

The Poinsettia Bowl has already sold more than 49,000 tickets for the game. The previous attendance record for the game was 39,129, which was set in 2007 when Navy played Utah.

When the founders of the Poinsettia Bowl were creating this Bowl many years ago, their dream match-up was the Aztecs and the Midshipmen.

Navy's Defensive Coordinator takes a bend but don't break approach to pass coverage forcing everything underneath with lots of help over the top. This Aztec offense and receiving corp will be a big challenge for the defensive backs of the Midshipment. It is the best group all year they have faced.

There can't be very many days of the year that an indoor practice facility is needed in San Diego bu it sure would have been helpful the last couple of days as both teams have been forced to practice inside the Hotel's ballroom where they couldn't pass or punt the football. This is all due to the large amount of rain they have been receiving lately in Southern California. Apparently it's projected to continue right up until game time.

Five things to watch SDSU vs Navy

1. Air Force: San Diego State has the ability to be a balanced football team. But the offense is at its best when it tries to hit the long ball. Quarterback Ryan Lindley has 14 touchdown passes of 32 yards or longer this season -- including bombs of 90 and 82 yards -- and 58 passes of 20 yards or more. Vincent Brown and DeMarco Sampson, both first team all-conference receivers, are a mismatch for most teams. Should Navy back off and yield the short, underneath passes, look for Dominique Sandifer and tight end Gavin Escobar to have big games.

2. Run, Ronnie, Run: When the Aztecs aren't airing it out, they'll try to chip away with conference freshman of the year, running back Ronnie Hillman. With fullback Brandon Sullivan clearing a path, Hillman grinds on teams before finally breaking off a big run. He's had 11 rushes go for at least 20 yards this year and five of 40 yards or more. He averages 108.7 yards per game and his 1,304 yards and 14 touchdowns were one of the best freshman seasons in school history.

3. Teich-ing the triple: SDSU head coach Brady Hoke said the key to this game is stopping the fullback, Alexander Teich. If the Aztecs take away the belly dive, it becomes a footrace to the outside option. This is where the 3-3-5 defense comes in handy. Having the extra defensive backs/safeties adds an element of speed to SDSU's defense. But if Teich (825 yards, five touchdowns, 68.8 ypg) has a big day, that means quarterback Ricky Dobbs will also have a big day running the option to the outside.

4. Sucker punch: If the Aztecs learned anything from watching the Army-Navy game, it's that Dobbs also has an arm. Navy will pound away for two and three yards at a time, sucking in the safeties and linebackers. And when the moment is right, they'll pop a play-action over the head of the defense. Dobbs has 12 touchdown passes this season, including a 77-yarder to John Howell against Army and an 85-yarder to Greg Jones (30 catches, 577 yards, four touchdowns) in the previous win over Arkansas State.

5. Getting gadgety: Bowl season means it's time for gadget plays. The offensive coordinators have had them in their back pocket all season so now is the time. Fake punts, field goals, unexpected on-side kicks and half-back passes are more common in bowl games than during the regular season. Perhaps a double pass? We know the Aztecs have a double-reverse flea-flicker in their bag (see the TCU game). A properly-timed gadget play could be a momentum swinger.

"...“What makes them so effective and efficient, they’re third in the country in rush offense, is that they believe in the option game. They recruit to it and do a great job. They’re different than Air Force, who has those elements but will also be more conventional in what they do with some two-back stuff and the passing game. Air Force had 163 formations that we had to look at, Navy has eight or nine. They’re more committed to the triple option series, so they’ve gotten better at it. Their kids are disciplined in what they’re doing; they’re the least penalized team in the country.”

On preparing for the triple option:
“Our kids have done a great job with preparation all year. A guy like Ernie Lawson has been in every day watching film. He’s a football junkie. He does a great job, and a lot of the other guys are the same way. They just work hard.”

“It is pretty different, but I think playing Air Force does help to a certain extent even though they run some different stuff. We still have to prepare a lot because of how well they run their offense. They don’t mess up too much, if at all. That takes a lot of preparation with the scout guys attempting to mimic their tempo.”..."

Hey Tiernan...Don't know if your son is interested or not but there is a rally on the USS Midway today, Wednesday, at 5:00 PM rain or shine It has been moved inside to the galley of the Midway. There is no admission charge and the Navy football team, cheerleaders and band will be in attendance.

Best of luck to the Midshipmen in this one. They are a fun team to watch.

I did hear this morning on the radio that SoCal is due for eight more inches of rain today. Yikes.

Yeah, it's ugly out there right now. This weather has got to be dampening some of the activities that both teams plan for their kids. There's probably a lot of sitting around in the hotel room going on. it kind of stinks for them.

The Mids have their hands full with this one. I'm trying to find a way to be able to pick them to win. It isn't easy. I'm still searching.
