Agreed. If I'm at the ER with my kids the last thing on my mind is making sure I don't piss off my boss enough that he wants to be in my a s s.

There are many many companies that have actual policies about how call offs can be done. Many places you can get written up for calling off any way other than actually speaking to someone. Typically a lot of managers in direct supervision won't care, but in a situation like this it's best to speak with HR first about what the actual policy is before complaining to anyone. I would venture to say that if the company is of any size, they will have the standard call off procedure which is that you must speak with someone.

I just think in this day and age and with the technology we have at most places this should be acceptable if you have a direct supervisor/management. Now if you work in lets say a call center where yes you have a supervisor but you have schedule that is actually updated by another department (which is my job) those reps actually need to call and talk or leave a message on the supervisor assist line so they can report that to my department.

I think it has to do with security and verification issues.

Understood there, however normally when you take off work for whatever reason some sort of benefit needs to be used. So where I work (State Farm) when I text my boss I am out for whatever he actually has to submit a form on my behalf to deduct my benefits so that is how it will be tracked at least here. Then when I complete my timecard for the pay period that absence also needs to reflect on my timecard and before it is sent to payroll the supervisor again must assure my timecard is legit before approving.

That is no different either, but that doesn't mean that you supervisor is properly accepting your call off, aka official company policy. So in other words if you do something that your boss normally allows, but then he gets pissed at your for calling off on a day he really needs you or thinks you are abusing the system, if you are not following actual company policy, no matter what your boss has accepted in the past, you can get into trouble.

I don't dispute that if there is an actual company policy on the absence reporting, that is what it really lies on!

I think it depends on the situation, your bosses preference and how close you are to him. If you have a friendly relationship and text regularly then a text would have been ok. If the relationship is more professional then a phone call would probably be a better idea.
No matter what if you're kids are in the ER he shouldn't be that pissed. He could tell you later how he'd like you to handle calling off in case of emergency but getting on you when your kids are in the ER is only going to make it worse.

Heck, the main reason i WOULDNT text is because it isnt always reliable. i know i have had text that did not get sent, or they were delayed by a few hours. a verbal conversation by phone always makes it through.

I love all the know it alls. Just to shed some more light on the subject. I was texted 15 times by my boss after my first text. Don't you think I know what is the proper way to call off. After all I am a pussy ass slacker as was posted by some dick on this thread lol.

Genghis - Can you give any of the ambiguous information to us? What was the problem? Kids OK? Why boss had an issue? Etc. I think there is too much information left out for many people to make a fair assessment of the situation.

Kids are fine. One was dehydrated due to the flu and the youngest had the croup.
