There is a series on Navy Seniors leading up to the Army game. Here's a good one on Ricky Dobbs.
True Navy fans are going to miss Ricky Dobbs. He is the face of Navy Football and his personalty is magnetizing. It's interesting that he almost left when at NAPS because he was not at QB. Then again when Paul Johnson left he almost followed him to Georgia Tech!
"..."All it would have taken was for Coach Johnson's number to show up on my phone and I was going to go. I would have been on the first plane to Atlanta," Dobbs said this week. "Fortunately, God had it in his plan for me to stay here...."
Some things I think reflect Dobbs' personality from the article.
"..."All the NAPS coaches said that whenever Ricky got in the huddle, things changed. He had that ability to take charge and get the players around him fired up," Jasper said. ..."
"..."Ricky is so hard to read. He will go down as the most complex quarterback I've had in terms of what makes him tick," Jasper said. "He's not a rah-rah guy, not real emotional or much of a talker. He's just going to go out there and play his game."
Jasper has been tough on Dobbs at times and the quarterback did not deny that it's been difficult to handle at times. Dobbs is a naturally optimistic individual with a strong spiritual side and believes in positive reinforcement. ..."
"...Ricky is a tremendous young man. He's been spectacular on the field and even better off the field," Niumatalolo said. "I haven't met anyone here at the academy who doesn't like Ricky - military officers, professors, athletic department personnel. I really think Ricky epitomizes what we're looking for here at the Naval Academy. He has been a model Midshipman and a great football player."
Dobbs usually begins a post-game press conference by thanking God and often quotes scripture. Niumatalolo will never forget rushing to the quarterback's locker at halftime of last year's SMU game in order to scream at him for poor play and found the soft-spoken youngster reading the bible. The fiery head coach could only pat Dobbs on the shoulder and ask him to please play better in the second half.
"Ricky is a spiritual giant. His faith is very important to him and is what makes him the strong person that he is," Niumatalolo said. "Ricky does have a certain charisma. He's just a genuine person and everyone is naturally drawn to him."..."
Bravo Zulu Ricky...now Beat Army.
