Fly in Friday morning, stay till the next Sunday...two games...get to see Massillon at PBTS and Ursuline at Death Valley.
That's not a bad idea. I haven't been in PBTS since I announced for the Big Red Band in the 1970's. I'll never forget the last time I was there. Instead of having me announce from the pressbox like they do in Harding Stadium, I had to stand just off the field with a microphone. As fate would have it, they parked me immediately next to the tiger cage. That tiger kept looking at me hungrily the whole time I was out there. I think those were the fastest announcements I ever made. I was happy to get away from there!
I was a freshman in the Big Red Band in 1962 when we went there and beat Massillon. Tony Violi, the band director, used a select band that night. We only marched 64 plus majorettes and he only used two of us freshmen. I think the band outdid the football team that night. When the game was over and we won, the band lined up in parade formation and marched around the field playing the Fight Song. It was a very exciting night. The next day the band had a tag day. We couldn't have picked a better time! People were throwing money at us. The whole town was really gung-ho. Even the Central people were very generous.
What great memories. My late father, John Carlton, saw nearly every Big Red game for 75 years. He even attended games when he was well into his 90's. He was actually the last living person to help build Harding Stadium in 1930. He told me all the details about that. I really miss him and his wonderful stories.
