And of course, after finishing 1-2 at Daytona 500 when Sr. died, they revisited Daytona in July for the Pepis 400. Dale Jr. and Waltrip would again finish 1-2 as Jr. takes the win at his first time back at Daytona since the track took his father's life.

Jr. and Waltrip embracing on top of the car after the race is one of my favorite moments in NASCAR. (No homo) Mikey finally getting to celebrate his 500 win.

After the deaths of Davey Allison and Alan Kulwicki, the championship came down to a battle between Earnhardt and Rusty Wallace at the final race of the season at Atlanta. Wallace won the race, but it wasn't enough, Earnhardt took the 1993 title championship. Both drivers took a "Polish victory lap", which was made famous by Kulwicki, around Atlanta Motor Speedway after the race, Earnhardt with a Kulwicki flag and Wallace with an Allison flag.

I remember Sr. always teasing Gordon for being 'the kid' when he was up and coming, Gordon won the first race at the Brickyard in '94. Sr. won the 2nd race at the Brickyard in '95. After the race Sr. took a little jab at Gordon by claiming he was "the first man to ever win the Brickyard." LOL

The link has all of Dale's stories. The first youtube is a recording that Godwin Kelly kept private until this year. Scroll down and the pictures of Mike and Schrader in Victory Lane and of Dale Jr. leaving the hospital are worth much more than 1000 words.

They don't call DIS Dale-tona for nothin'
I used to be one of those fans yelling 'Anybody but Earnhardt' and it worked a couple of times, like when Derrick Cope won. I didn't yell it in '98 because he deserved a 500 win by then. Sterling Marlin had a pit road reception line first when he won it in '94. A couple of my good friends knew Dale pretty well. We all knew they cheated, but Bill Jr. let them. I was never a Dale Sr. fan because I liked Alan and Davey and other drivers at the same time. But I was a Dale Jr. fan early on, from his start in the Busch series. I know the story of Sr. not helping Dale and Kelly's mom when he should have, and shipping the kids off to boot camp school because Teresa didn't want them around, so that was a big reason I didn't respect him as a man, only as a talented but dirty driver. Possibly the best display of his talent came just 2 days before he died. I was in the stands watching the IROC race, and going into turn 1 he got punted into the grass, I think it was Eddie Cheever who did it. Dale never lost it, looked like he never lifted his foot. He just drove through it and back up on the apron and banking as if it was a shortcut. Every fan around smiled and cheered that save. I was in the (brand new)Earnhardt Tower in the front row on Black Sunday, and I saw he was blocking and knew Mike and Jr. were going to stay in front, so I took off after the white flag to beat the crowd out and beat 4 hours of sitting in traffic, never saw the fatal wreck. I'm glad for that. My girlfriend at the time was a huge Dale Sr. fan, so I had to go back to the track that night or the next night so she could leave a candle. It was a big round black candle with 3 wicks. That July race 5 months later was pure magic. I was with my dad in the Weatherly tower. Dale Jr. handled himself so well during that whole time since Black Sunday, something I admired and learned from. He came down a week early with his close friends. He handled the media crush and won the race, man what a celebration. That July night was my best Nascar moment ever, replacing my first 500 in '79.

Did someone already post that Kenny Wallace will be the stand in guy, for Matt Kenseth, in case his wife has a baby?

The ARCA race from Daytona will be live on Speed tv Sat. at 4:30. Watch for Kevin Swindell, Ty Dillon in a UNOH Chevy, Ricky Carmichael, and the regulars to be up front. My friend Mark Gibson will have Drew Charlson of New Bremen, Ohio in his car #59. The only other Ohio racer is #58 Chad Hackenbracht from New Philadelphia.

Bud Shootout is Sat nite at 8pm. I wish it was during the day, it would be so much warmer and nicer.
The eligible drivers are here Bud Shootout list
The starting position draw party is Friday night on Speed. The race distance will continue to be 75 laps (187.5 miles), consisting of two segments – 25 and 50 laps. Both green-flag laps and yellow-flag laps will count. Between segments there will be a 10-minute pit stop allowing teams to pit and change tires, add fuel and make normal chassis adjustments.
Brad Paisley will sing 3 songs before the 500. yeehaw
The Lucas Oil Dirt Late Models are racing at East Bay near Tampa , also available on PPV online.

Here is a really good write up by Lee Spencer. She is one of the best. It has good stories of Dale Sr., including the one Gordon told at lunch during Jan. testing.

Paul McMahon 12.57 seconds, 123mph set fast time tonite.
Sammy and Bowyer won again, again.
Speed tv Remembering Dale show Friday @ 7:30. Saw a clip of it and Schrader talks about rushing to victory lane after the wreck to see Mike. That is the pic I mentioned 10 posts above. Bud Shootout practice is before, the starting position draw party is after.
