Mandatory cautions are extremely dumb, IMO. If the teams aren't smart enough to come in on their own and change tires, that is their problem.

not the teams' call. Nascar & Goodyear call it. Happens 5-10 times a year. This week is odd though because its rare to change tire compounds in mid-event. Just like Dunlop at Daytona last week, but not in the middle of the race.

Yes I know it's not their call. Hence the "mandatory".

NASCAR doesn't do it for the drivers. They do it for themselves so they can get research on the tires and see if they are going to hold up. After the mandatory, NASCAR looks at the tires from every team.

Sure they test. But...

A) It's a new track surface
B) When they test in December/January, the track isn't going to be the same in March. So the tire in colder December's test could have been fine, but doesn't work on the new track surface in the warmer March. Too many variables play a factor in it.

They had problems...and they are doing what they can to fix it. It's a caution, big deal.

Right, because that 2 minutes it takes for a caution is a huge deal. 50 laps into the race is going to make a difference on the outcome too isn't it? Guess it's stupid for thinking it's a big deal. Considering teams prepare their cars at least a month in advance, it would be impossible to test in March. You don't know if you are going to have problems until you get to the track. If you do, you fix it. Just like they are doing.

Sure could make a difference. If you don't think so that is just ignorant. Doesn't mean it will, but it could. I think it's downright pathetic they can't figure out tires enough to not have to take a mandatory caution DURING A RACE.

What did they do in the old days when they didn't do this?

Exactly. They don't have a caution, the drivers are unaware of any issues, and on lap 52, a tire goes down on a car and takes out half the field. Sure could play a big part in the outcome huh? Nothing pathetic about it. Like I said, there is too many variables that go into each track to know exactly what that tire is going to do at that particular track at that particular time.

So, new surface, new tire, and you go 52 laps without a stop. That's your fault for being a dumbass.

Nascar should know what they are bringing to the track, and the teams should know what they are dealing with. If they decide to push it, that's the chance you take.
