In addition, all three car chiefs Chris Gillin (#11 car), Wesley Sherrill (#18 car) and Jason Shapiro (#20 car) along with Senior Vice President of Racing Operations Jimmy Makar have been placed on NASCAR probation until Dec. 31.

While a standard NASCAR Sprint Cup oil pan weighs about 4 pounds, the three taken off the Gibbs cars weighed an estimated 20-30 pounds apiece.

funny thing is, Hamlin won the race with a normal oil pan.

Am I missing something? What advantage does a weighted oil pan give you? More front downforce?

Lowers the center of gravity on the car to help with turning would be my guess.

Correct. Lets you displace weight from the rear and put it up front. Which as you said, gives them the turning advantage.

I really don't get why the Crew Chiefs are in any trouble but oh well.

Also the oil pans only weighed 12-16 pounds. Not 20-30.

Ummm, because they are responsible for every part that gets put on that car maybe?

Not sure where you're getting that. Every report I've seen has them at 20-30. But regardless, that's not the issue. The issue is the fact that they didn't get the part approved by NASCAR before using it. It's not necessarily an illegal part, they just didn't get the proper approval beforehand. Every part on that car has to be approved by NASCAR.

Yes I know every part has to be approved but the Car Chief should be the one with the fine not the crew chief. But like I said oh well it's not that big of a deal. Read it earlier on a site. They said it was 3x the allowed weight.

Car Chief gets the pieces approved by NASCAR. Crew Chief has a hand on what parts are put on that car.

I know that but if the car chiefs said do it they are at fault. I agree they should all be on probation but thought the fine should be on the car chiefs. Also how was Gibbs not fined? Or did I miss that.

But oh well they weren't ever used and Denny got the win.

Hoping Kurt gets a win soon he is due.

Car Chief isn't putting anything on that car that the Crew Chief doesn't want on it. They are both equally at fault.

I know that but I think someone higher up should have been the one who got a fine as well. It not like only one of the Gibbs cars did the oil pan. I love Joe Gibbs but he is the one who had to give the order to get those new oil pans to the track and put in the cars.

They should just suspend the entire JGR team for 5 races.

Someone higher up did get fined. Jimmy Makar. And sorry, but I highly doubt Joe Gibbs personally knew anything about it.
