My company is giving all North American employees a 16GB iPad w/ Wi-Fi and 3G; anyone have one? What can I use this for? I had not given any thought to owning an iPad, but I suppose this has fallen into my lap.

No, but I've wondered about the utility of one. I mean, you can't do serious computing on it, and it's not particularly easy to surf the web, and it's not as good of a book reader as a Kindle . . . so what do you use it for? An expensive toy? A fun gadget? I don't know any professionals who actually use it for real productivity purposes--perhaps an artist, musician, photographer, etc. could use it, but I don't see how it's particularly useful for most people doing general office productivity work. I'm willing to be persuaded, but it seems to me that it tries to be all things to all men and fails miserably at it. I'd rather keep my laptop and just pick up a Kindle for book reading.

I might just sell it. Can probably get ~$600 for it on eBay.

Read books, watch movies, play games, surf the internet, listen to music, view pictures are some of the things. My dad has one and I'd sure take one for free.

Is it worth is without getting the 3G? That is, only wi-fi? I don't own a laptop (only a desktop) so I'm thinking I'd use this as a laptop/netbook of sorts. But if it's clunky to use for email/internet I'd probably be better off with the $600.

I was going to get one of these but it is way too expensive. I think I am going to get a Nook color instead. It is an e-reader and has wifi/browser capability. The nook color is much more affordable and is getting solid reviews

The next step will be downsizing.

Performance this year; exceeded revenue and profit projections across the board. Last year they got us all a $100 Amazon gift card (even though it wasn't a great year).

They are excellent little internet devices. Wonderful if you travel. Also good for around the house media use, things like recipes, a bunch of other things.

Would I get one in place of a laptop/netbook? Of course not?

Heh.

Generally, I think if you have a laptop and a smart phone, you can do pretty much everything you would need an iPad to do, just better. Does anyone really think it's better to surf the web on an iPad than a laptop? Or type out texts better on the iPad than on the iPhone? It just seems to me like a strange product that is "cool" but not particularly useful.

This.

We have one at work I don't understand the buzz. I guess it's a cool gadget. But it doesn't do anything particularly useful outside of browsing. Typing on it is not easy either.

For the money, why not just get a laptop?

It is a much better mobile web browsing experience than a lot of laptops because it's thin, light, and doesn't take time to boot up.

There are a bunch of limitations and you won't be typing papers or reports on the thing but they certainly aren't worthless.

The iPad is actually a great web browser. It also has the App store going for it.

I'd like to have one, but I'm not going to pay the current price. However, compare the price to other tablets and you'll be surprised that the iPad is actually on the lower end of the spectrum price wise.

For anybody who says it's useless, they are generally clueless about it's actual capabilities. Obviously everybody has their opinions on the device itself, but it definitely has uses.

Not to mention the battery life, Netflix, e-book, video games, etc..etc..

These. I have a laptop and I have a Blackberry, why do I need (or even want) an Ipad?

So what are it's capabilities outside of browsing? Video games? I can get Netflix many other ways.

And, if I'm sitting on the couch or a table, I don't want a flat device. I'd rather have a laptop where I can see the screen without holding it. Did I mention the typing?

Decided to sell it to my dad for $600. He's giving it to his girlfriend for Christmas. I'd rather use the money on Christmas presents for others/bills, than have an iPad worth $300 when the new model comes out in four months.
