"It would be nice if we were coming off a championship-contending season, but we're not. We're not that far off from having a contending team and we expect to be one soon."

Unfortunately, it is what it is. Baseball needs a cap. I heard on espn radio yesterday that the Yankees, over the last 5 years, have averaged 60 mil more than the 2nd team in highest payroll.....60 fucking million more!

It does make it sweet when they fail....like last year.

The guy went on to say something like....that's 4 players at 15 mil a piece. Which pretty much means 4 allstars at their positions. Hell, we can't even sign 1 player at that price.

True, I hope the Dolans don't try to get the "hometown" discount when they offer Choo. I have a bad feeling about the whole arbitration thing with him.

I've had a bad feeling ever since I heard he wanted to play for a contending team. Dolan better not mess around with him. Give him a contract he can't turn down. He is the best player on the Tribe, by far.

Apparently finishing LAST in attendance last year didn't send a message to the Dolans. One has to wonder if they'll ever get it.

if you cant afford to make the team a winner, you have no business owning the team.

I wish Mark Cuban would buy the team.

A salary cap is needed. Dolan is going to wait until he makes a decent amount, then he will use that decent amount to try to form a contender for one year. Whether they contend or not, the team will disband after the season, because he wont want to pay for them.

Give it a few years till Gilbert has some casino money lining his pockets. With his two biggest assets (casino/Cavs) nearby he will want something to attract more people to the area and a losing baseball team won't be it.

I've administered a season ticket plan for a group of guys since the beginning of Jacob's Field....and I cannot renew because half the guys have dropped out. Last year I was able to talk them into staying another year, and I bought a few extra games to be able to renew the plan, but this year...no chance. The main reasons I've heard for these guys not renewing is the structure of MLB that allows big market teams to be able to outbid small markets, and an owner that won't spend/can't afford to spend to keep the team competitive. The clincher was the Cliff Lee salary dump. The team was not willing to keep a moderately priced CY Young winning ace, trading him a year early, and not even getting the Phillies top prospects. It was a terrible move not only from a baseball perspective, but from a public relations perspective as well. The guys in my plan are/were die hard baseball fans, but they threw it in right there.
The team didn't win a champioinship in its 90's run because of the lack of a #1 starter....and we let two slip out of our grasp in as many years with nary a half hearted attempt to to extend either. Even worse was what was received in return. Without looking thru rose colored glasses..does any one see any All Stars in the bunch?

I'm pretty sure Dolan doesn't give a crap about any of this. With the luxury tax and not spending on payroll, he's making money.

That he doesn't want to try and compete in a rigged system shouldn't be a surprise to anyone.

Honestly, I'm more surprised when owners of mid sized market teams DO want to spend money and try to compete.

This is a great point....with the revenue sharing and Luxury tax...there is no incentive for small market teams to win. Dolan is full of shit...organizations like Cleveland and Pittsburgh are making money.

You need look no further than the Jeter contract issue now to see what's wrong with baseball. Yeah, he's unhappy, 5 years and 45 million apart from what the Yankees are offering. Too bad no other franchise could offer a 37 year old guy 5 years let alone the money. So he'll kick and scream like a baby and end up in NY, cause nobody else has the ability to take him from them. What a bunch of crap.

Not really related, but also not worth it's own thread. Looks like Victor Martinez is rejoining the AL Central with the Tigers.
