In D5, yes, they most certainly are.

Now ya' know Thin, there's a big difference between weeks 2 and 4 and week 12. I could go back to either loss and show several instances where Dover miscues were so costly as to easily be blamed for those loses. But any of us could do that with just about any game we play and on both sides of the ball. We can look at Dover/Steubenville or Dover/Sheridan, put up a few 'if only's' and make a real good case for either loser to win. Mistakes are just as much a part of the game as good execution. The best teams still work around them and find the way to win.
Both of those Dover loses were very close contests that could easily have ended in a W for Dover, but none the less they didn't.

Maybe Big Red could have beaten Sheridan but we'll never know because you couldn't beat Dover and get the chance to find out. Maybe Dover could have beaten Steubenville three times in a row this year but we'll never know cuz' that's not how it works either. You get your one shot in the playouts and if you can't 'do it' you go home and wash your uniforms! On those givens nights seeds 2 and 3 couldn't 'do it' seed 7 could!

Yeap...you can wait until next year; you can bask in the glory of past years. And you know what, that has nothing to do with this year as does anything our past teams have done(or not done). Steubenville and Sheridan both brought their games to the table against Dover and we won both. That's what happened THIS YEAR!

So now Dover moves on to week 13 to face Marlington and the rest of you stay behind. That's how it works, that's how your team did THIS YEAR!
Now these Dover boys get to play in the Region 11 championship and they deserve EVERY DAMN PLAY!!!

I don't think finding out "who Mooney/Ursuline is" is the question....I think the question is where are they from?

Seems there's a big difference in perspective here and that's OK - we're both getting what we want.

Some relish the record and realize great pride in how many wins their team can accumulate over the years.
Some seek their satisfaction from what the youth of their community can achieve be it football, basketball or, yes, women's volleyball.

You are absolutely right Thin - I'm into football until we've played our last game of the season and then I'll put it away until next season because it's not about the game, it's about the kids! Afterward, I'll be at nearly every boy's basketball game (no doubt as we pursue another ECOL title and a satisfying tourney run), I'll probably take in a couple women's BB games and then watch some baseball.

And you know - I wouldn't have it any other way.
I know a lot of these kids and their families and I'll not spend a second wondering who we might get to transfer in to play football for us next year - THEY"RE ALREADY HERE!

SO WHAT!

That statement carries as much relevance to high school sport as Ohio State boasting they can beat Heidelberg.

Ursuline isn't a high school football program in any capacity of what high school sports is, or should be, about. Like Mooney and similar cohorts, Ursuline is more like a 'professional' amalgam of talented high school age athletes from a large geographic area assembled to win games and raise money for the program - and nothing more. Had they any capacity for introspection, even the jaded Irish faithful could see actuality.

The Yankees win baseball titles year over year only because they have the means to buy the best players. You do the same thing, just using a different currency! Yeah, I know, it's legal within the rules set by OHSAA but it's outside the spirit of high school sport.

Let Dover cherry-pick the cream from the top football talent in Tuscarawas and surrounding counties and we'd beat everyone in the state as well - SO WHAT! Nothing but hollow victories. We've all heard the rhetoric; "stop living in the past", "live with it, this is what HS football is about today", "everyone does it" - kinda like the neighbor's dog that craps in your yard; you may have to live with it, but everyone knows where the stink comes from. You think everyone envies your success? Think again.

The day Dover's coaching staff, AD and administration decide it's time to import players so they can win more games is the day I cancel my season tickets (and I like my seats!).

If this thread had any real steam it would give a multitude of choices ...such as Lakewood StEds and several others even Marlington ..I know this guy was just happy and wanted to toot but may I suggest you open a poll question that has ten playoff contenders and lets see what the voters think ..Just saying

I've already said they could probably hold their own against a lot of teams in a one-off game. My response was to the suggestion that they'd "win any division in the state," including possibly D1. D2 would be a 50/50 shot at best, and there's no way they'd run a 5-game gauntlet and win a D1 title. I'd go as far as to say that their only remote shot at a D1 regional title would be in Region 2.

Yes. I watched the SVSM game and have seen tape on Mooney and St. Chuck.

Looks like a point of clarification is needed.

The poll at the top of this thread is a decoration, a mere splash of bling if you like. It seemed obvious to me it was not intended to elicit any serious discussion as to who is, or is not, the ‘real deal’! The only serious motivation for me in starting the thread was in response to a few posters who adamantly contended Dover had no chance against Sheridan because, in their estimation, Sheridan was “the real deal”. If anything, a Big Red fan should have been incensed by those comments as they implied that Steubenville was not the ‘real deal’. I may add I don’t think these posters were even Sheridan fans, but more likely just Dover ‘haters’ if I may borrow that much over used cliché.

It seems to me that none of the polls on bulletin boards such as OC should be taken as anything more than an interesting diversion. We get a cut little button we can press to express our approval, disapproval, satisfaction, or whatever but the results don’t really mean anything. We’re a captive and very opinionated audience and most of what’s said is based on much emotion and little fact.

If anyone seriously took umbrage with the title you have my most sincere apologies.

Perhaps it is a good thread in spite of the title!
