He needs to show improvement, and thus far he hasn't done much to show improvement yet. Now, this year's team is certainly better than last year's team. More talent and experience. However, they have only won one conference game this year and they only won one conference game last year. I think that they need to finish at least 4-4 in the Big Ten. Next week they play at Penn State at night, which is always difficult, even though Penn State isn't very good this year. Then they get Illinois the next week who has proven to be tough. Then they play at Purdue who they should beat no problem. They finish off their season with Wisconsin and at Ohio State, and they aren't going to tin those two games. So Michigan has to win their next three games just to finish .500 in conference, and that is going to be difficult. If they don't, he's certainly on the hot seat.

Greg Robinson should be gone before Rrod IMO. Long before

Michigan might call all of these guys, but I don't think that any of them are real possibilities.

1. Urban Meyer (even though Florida is bad this year) would have to be out of him mind to leave Florida for Michigan right now.
2. I don't think Jim Harbaugh wants to leave beautiful Palo Alto while USC is down to head to Ann Arbor. Besides, he wants an NFL job and would jump the first chance he got, so he wouldn't be a good choice for the school anyway.
3. Pat Fitzgerald is a NW alum and I don't see him leaving, even for a job like Michigan (and would Michigan really want to hire someone else away from their alma matter?).
4. If Patterson were going to leave TCU it would have happened already.
5. Gary Patterson is a possibility, but honestly, I think he really likes Boise and could end up being like Patterson and stay at his mid-major school for a long time.

If they don't make a bowl game I don't think he will be around. I think he is finally getting his players in his system. The problem is, he is an offensive minded coach, and his defenses have always been subpar and that is why he can't get over the hump.

I was actually thinking about this today. Greg Robinson is a very good Coach and he has a really really young defense. They played over 8 true freshmen on defense this year. The Offense is much better so I really don't think it is RR's fault. However they must start winning soon or he is going to be gone. The next 3 games are winnable but Michigan lost 2 winnable games last year that could have made the season in Purdue and Illinois. I really think they need to win 2 of the next 3 of RR will be is serious trouble and if they loose out, he is gone for sure. PSU is a winnable game as they are struggling passing the ball which is where Michigan is struggling on deference the most IMO. Illinois is a good team when they feel like showing up and it is also at the Big House ( I will be there ) so Michigan can definitely win that game. Finally Purdue is really bad (mostly because of injuries) and Michigan should win this game with ease.

So I am saying 5-7 and he is gone, 6-6 and it will be up in the air, and 7-5 or better and he will be just fine. The bye week is a huge help and I really hope they can get things rolling again and beat PSU. That would make the season IMO as there is no way they loose to Illinois and Purdue if they are playing with confidence (after a win against PSU). I think they will be 7-5 and RR will be back one more year for sure. I also think the defense is going to improve next year as the guys are flat out inexperienced and undersized. 1 year of lifting and getting into shape along with another year in the system(remember they just switched this year to 3-3-5 ) they can make big improvements on that side of the ball. They will be a good team next year IMO but RR has to get to 7-5 to guarantee his job IMO.

The only way he is fired is if they don't make a bowl game, which would mean losing to a hapless Purdue team and mediocre Illinois and Penn State teams. Losing to Wisconsin and Ohio State is understandable, losing to Purdue isn't. Still though, you can make an argument Richrod's offense is the future of college football; Michigan wanted to go a different direction and they have to give the guy time. He has a very capable offense that is still remarkably young, he just needs a defense. His defensive recruits fizzled and left, so he's back to square one and being a year or two away from a respectable defense. Greg Robinson isn't even too culpable as it doesn't look like it's X's and O's. Any time you have Jordan Kovacs starting, you have to scratch your head and wonder.

Michigan keeps RichRod because Denard Robinson has given people a glimpse of what his offense can do, and most people like it. Granted, there are traditionalists who call it gimmicky or whatnot, but those people said the same thing to BYU in the 1980's too. Give RichRod time and he could take the Big Ten by storm. It's a gamble, but starting over again is asking for two more years of pain minimum. They don't want to go the Notre Dame way and hire a bad coach after a bad coach after a bad coach, they will find themselves 22+ years removed from a national championship.

the 3-3-5 is a TERRIBLE idea

1. Thin in the secondary
2. lots of power running teams int he big 10
3. rushing 3 and playing soft coverage is basically just asking teams to nickel dime them down the field.

If you're gonna play 3-3-5 at least play aggressive and press the CBs on the Wr's instead of dropping off. I lose my mind watching how many shallow crossing routes and slants are caught on Michigans D this year. A good D coordinator would scrap the 3-3-5 and just put a basic 4-3 scheme into play nothing special since they didndt have the off season to work on it. But most kids could pick up a 4-3 scheme pretty easily....And it cant possibly be worse then whats put on the field now

The way to keep your job at Michigan or Ohio State has generally had something to do with your ability to win "The Game" each year and appear in a decent Bowl Game. So far, JT is 2-0 and RR is 0-2. RR is in a little bit of trouble now but if things don't change in the coming season, I think another guy is on his way. I would say that RR has one more year regardless of how this season ends up.

They've been running a lot of 4 man fronts recently. The 3-3-5 can work against the run, it just needs the personnel. I'm not saying i'm a fan of it, but I think Michigan's problem right now is more personnel than it is scheme.

If UM loses this week to PSU...the dogs will be salivating big time IMO. Even though PSU isn't too great this year, this is a HUGE game for UM coming off of a bye week. If they happen to lose, it could get ugly real quick.

I agree. I think they'll beat them, but if they don't....oh boy.

Given he has beaten ND this year, if he can beat Penn St. and only losses to Wisconsin and even OSU, but goes to a bowl game, he is safe.

Next year will be the telling year for Rich Rod.

This will end their season with a 7-5 record, which will probably be enough to hold RichRod around for another year, and even if they loose to Illinois, 6-6 with a bowl trip, win or loss, I think they keep him around. If they get swept from the remainder of the season, however, Richrod is done, no question.
