OK, so I need a router. Just bought a PS3 and the old router I had doesn't work. I will have the PS3 wired for internet, so I don't need, nor do I want anything wireless. Been reading a lot about gigabit routers and how they are supposed to be so excellent for gaming and streaming HD movies, which I intend to do via Netflix. Anyone used one of those? Is there really a noticeable difference between these and a regular router? I ask because there is quite a difference in price.

What routers are you looking at? I have never had a problem streaming Netflix wirelessly through PS3. And yes, I know you said you didn't want wireless, just saying that I don't think the gigabyte router would be needed.

I use wireless....and never have any lag, so I doubt it is worth the price difference. I do have the premium internet service though, so I have a better upload/download speed.

I'm looking at the Netgear N600. I've read a lot of positive things about them online. I'd actually never even heard of gigabit routers until I started looking into routers.

http://www.netgear.com/products/home/wirelessrouters/high-performance/WNDR3700.aspx

Best Buy has it on sale right now for like $139.99.

Do you do a lot of streaming or gaming on your PS3/X-box while someone else is on the computer online too? That's a main concern of mine, because if I'm gaming, the wife or my son will be on the computer.

Eh no not really a lot. If I do stream a movie through netflix, most of the time I'll be on my laptop at the same time and don't have any issues.

All summer I would stream live baseball games on PS3 using mlb.tv and would be using the laptop/internet for about 95% of the time too.

It won't make the internet or gaming faster. What it will make is file sharing on your network faster.

Regular 100mbit ethernet is already faster than your internet connection speed so getting the gigabit and hoping for an increase in speed isn't going to help.
