im pretty sure in the article given it says that while they would like to use them for carpool-like situations, they do not require a rail or slots on the road. they gave specific examples of windy roads and cliff side roads in California that it had (and another company) already driven on with success.

So, if they start using these what happens when they crash? They will crash, nothing's perfect, and they still have to drive on the same roads as human drivers. Who will pay for damages in a crash involving a computer?

If they want to be serious about this, they need to drive one of these basterds in cleveland in the winter. I don't see how a robot could compensate for ice, snow and cleveland drivers.
