What do you all think......go after Halladay or be patient and work him?

I believe typically in the playoffs you have to make things happen...and do it early...but just be smart as Halladay won't do many things that don't work too often. Basically. I just want the Reds to not swing for HR....hit it where it's pitched and adjust as needed.

I still feel the Phillies will either roll to the WS or be on the wrong side of a sweet upset.

I'm taking the Phillies in this series. It's been a great season for the Reds, but I think it stops here.

I don't think Halladay is someone they can wait and be patient with, he throws too many strikes with all of his pitches. If the Reds sit and wait to get into a hitters count, they are going to be making a lot of u turns. He is a workhorse so a lot of pitches aren't really going to effect him much. Its better to be aggressive but not reckless.

I'm not gonna make any predictions, but obviously the Phils are the one team that every one wanted to avoid in the divisional series. Having to face those 3 starters in a short series is less than ideal.

The Phillies are set up, for multiple reasons, to not only go to a 3rd straight World Series, but win another title. They have arguably the best pitching staff and offense in baseball and they also have home field advantage throughout. They also have the most experience of anyone in the playoffs, only the Yankees are close.

Part of me would rather face the best early on and NOT have to go out West. Then again, this is the playoffs, no competition is bad.

It's also Halladay's first postseason start. Sure, he's a veteran and multiple Cy Young Award winner, but still.

I thought about this as well, but its Edinson Volquez first as well isn't it?

Every starter for the Phillies has played in a World Series. Which I think will help Doc out.

The Reds typically have better luck winning in Philly than SF, but this season they got beat 4 straight, but not blown out. I hope they remember longer term than shorter term for confidence reasons.

I don't think Halladay throws many first pitch balls, but if he senses aggressiveness he is likely to get the Reds to go for pitches out of the zone, especially with runners in scoring position, so I'd think the aggressiveness would be most valuable to try to get a couple baserunners, then back off a little. Just like Karen Lotz said: aggressive, but not reckless! And Ironman is right about big swings, they would be counterproductive!

It is, but Volquez was also questioning his career at this time last year and the Reds are a huge underdog. People expect Halladay to come out and dominate despite being his first start. If Volquez blows up, that's expected. No pressure on the Reds.

I really think Halladay is going to be very solid. If you want to score runs on him it better to jump on him early, he gets stronger as the game goes. It will be key for the Reds to score runs when they have risp. Halladay really has buckled down when he has risp.

Reds need to be aggressive early against Halliday. When people get behind in the count is when they struggle against him. If you can work things a little bit and get deep and run up pitch counts, you have a chance.

Sweet glad it's a late afternoon game b/c I have class until 3:20 ....... Reds playoff baseball is even exciting to type! I hope Volquez can pitch a absolute gem in Game 1
